I wish they were that introspective. Most of them know what they are and revel in it.
Yeah that jpg is for a few years ago at this point

So… Since the inauguration I’ve made sure to never be out of my house without my valid American passport. Come to find out that would actually protect me from fuck all?
At what point should I start looking for friendly attics and basements to try and keep my family safe? Too late?

Nothing makes any of us safe.
You could shoot them I guess, but then they’ll just throw you in prison assuming you don’t die in the process.

I can think of one thing that makes some citizens safer (and less noticible) than others.

Without a doubt, but they could kidnap me or anyone else if they felt like it.
Link says Texas 18-year old had school ID only. I carry my passport card.

Well if it ever came to that, I have an attic and a basement. You can take your pick! The basement would be a lot more comfortable, but the attic might be safer when the Redhats come knocking.
This millennium, the American Dream has steadily morphed into the American Nightmare.
This criticism is right on. You have to believe two contradictory things: That opening our border would produce a huge flood of immigrants, and that our border is open right now.
Of course, Trumpsters have already demonstrated that they can believe two contradictory things, e.g. that the Mueller report is part of a secret deep state plot to stage a coup and topple the Presidency and that it totally exonerated the President. So it’s not really much of a challenge for them.
So at this point we are creating a new generation of Anne Franks.

Pretty much, which I guess will make me a much less handsome version of this guy by 2026, the way things are going.
So what’re the odds that political opponents start getting detained as the election nears?

I don’t think we’re there yet. I also don’t think we’re terribly far away from a time when Republicans and their Fox News allies fabricate a crime to jail an opponent, though. I mean, we were already at the “lock her up” chanting stage in 2016.
I think I need a drink.
For clarity, the Marine was only brought into custody in the first place because a (white) police officer thought he was a terrorist. He was trying to set a fire in a stairwell of a hospital, apparently, and the police officer referred the whole thing to ICE. We’ve had this in the news here in West Michigan for weeks, as the police say procedure was followed and civil rights groups say this was racial profiling.
Honestly, I think both positions are right. Someone trying to burn down a hospital should be investigated for potential terrorism connections. But that should happen through agencies other than ICE when it’s a US citizen involved, so the police officer did pick the wrong procedure to follow and racial profiling is the most likely reason, given the ID that the suspect had.
