I’ve said it before, the only way to stop this for these people is to grant them citizenship. The Democrats should plan to do that the next time they have control.

I’m confused by what you’re proposing. How does granting citizenship to asylum seekers prevent rules that would limit seeking asylum?

Seems like the fix should be legislation to limit the ability/discretion of the executive branch to deny asylum applications.

I feel like this needs to be examined in general. Our checks and balances don’t seem to… work.

No matter what, they will find a way to deport, detain, and harass immigrants. It’s their raison d’etre now, it’s how the GOP will be winning elections moving forward. The only way to stop the bleeding is to give them rights as citizens. Any law can be undone. Any policy will be changed or overwritten. They will be persecuted in perpetuity without it. So make it real easy for everyone in this country who is working and paying taxes to become a citizen. Like, embarrassingly easy. Like they come and show a pay stub and a residence and give them citizenship.

If you want to start with the dream act kids then sure. But don’t make them wait or it will be snatched away, just give it to them all at once.

Edit: and my point isn’t the mechanics, find a smart way to do it. Smarter than what I’ll come up with. But figure it out. Anything less than citizenship and we’ll be right here again in 6-10 years no matter the progress post Trump.

100% not going to happen, so not sure what the benefit of discussing it would be.

Lol. So like pretty much every conversation in every thread in P&R?

Yea, and let’s give everyone a guaranteed $100k a year annual income and end poverty while we are at it.

You guys are right. Let’s just keep shitting on immigrants forever. Take their kids and cage them too.

It’s not like there are only two options: 1) Totally open borders, anyone is allowed in, or 2) Nobody gets in and kids go in cages.

I’m talking about the people who are already here. Amnesty like in 86 wouldn’t work because the people who follow Trump will just recriminalize them somehow. If you can think of a strategy that protects undocumented people here that does not involve citizenship and will survive the next Republican administration, please, let’s hear it.

An amendment, maybe? Which would be an even harder thing to do.

I’m with you here, really, but the problem is that there is nothing you can do that they can’t undo later. They are right now revoking citizenship from people who have had it for decades — or asserting the right to do that — on the flimsy grounds that the original visa application or green card application or citizenship application was flawed in some way, or even that there was a process error by the government.

At some point the Republicans will realize the final solution to their immigration problem. Not too far-fetched given that the President of the US already jokes about shooting them.

Oh listen! I hear violins!

One Border Patrol agent in Tucson said he had been called a “sellout” and a “kid killer.” In El Paso, an agent said he and his colleagues in uniform had avoided eating lunch together except at certain “BP friendly” restaurants because “there’s always the possibility of them spitting in your food.” An agent in Arizona quit last year out of frustration. “Caging people for a nonviolent activity,” he said, “started to eat away at me.”

“To have gone from where people didn’t know much about us to where people actively hate us, it’s difficult,” said Chris Harris, who was an agent for 21 years and a Border Patrol union official until he retired in June 2018. “There’s no doubt morale has been poor in the past, and it’s abysmal now. I know a lot of guys just want to leave.”

without a paywall

Goose stepping gestapo wonders why people hate him, news at 11.

Basically since we first got to these stolen lands!

Yeah I do get the irony of anyone from the USA saying “these guys and their bad behavior!” But I do think splitting kids from their parents and caging them is a little beyond the pale for USA 201x. It’s more an argument for pro-caging to fall back on “yeah but we’ve been bad forever” so I refrain from pointing out that bit of national introspection.

They wanted to be heard, seen and considered. What they didn’t count on was how horrified the public would be at what they saw and heard.
