Concerns are mounting over added powers Ottawa has granted U.S. customs officers to strip-search, question and detain U.S.-bound travellers — on Canadian soil.

The changes are part of Canada’s new preclearance act, which the federal government says will enhance border security and make travel to the U.S. easier.

I’m of two minds on this. On the one hand, surely someone being questioned by U.S. customs officers is better off if the questioning happens on Canadian soil than U.S. soil, and the U.S. always has the option of closing these preclearance areas and conducting all interviews in the U.S.

On the other hand, it just sticks in my craw. I find it offensive how far they are allowed to go.

When I visited Brazil in 2008, they had a policy where Americans had to get fingerprinted and most other nationalities didn’t. This was a kind of retaliation against fingerprinting of Brazilian citizens entering the U.S.

I feel like going along is the best practical policy, but at the same time I think I’d cheer the government just saying “forget preclearance, get the hell out of here”.

Better respect their authority when you talk to them. It’s like when a cop stops you and asks for your Id. Sure I know what the law says. I also know there’s a non trivial chance they will fuck you up because you’re disrespecting them.
