Kids these days. Learning games with videos? Ain’t nobody got time for that!

(Thanks, I’ll check it out.)

Is there more to the card combat than just drawing cards and playing them? I’ve played a warrior and a thief and I thought the actual combat was super shallow…

Other than the deckbuilding, an additional layer of strategy comes in with enemy effects that will, for example, negate the first damage received or the first card played. Or cards in your hand that will give you additional actions that you’ll need to combo in the right order to use some of the more impressive cards. But, yeah, the deckbuilding is the lionshare.

Another +1 for Dream Quest, which I’ve found highly addictive so far. Besides the graphics, the only things I haven’t liked are the buttons. They’re tiny and hard to press on the iPhone.

Yep, I love it too for all the reasons people have said. The progression through unlocks by getting Achievements is cool as well. I played a bunch last night and made it to the 2nd level boss a few times. The only time I did not die and immediately hit “PLAY!” is when my iPad died. Yeah the combat is a bit shallow, but that is the case with roguelikes in general at early levels. AS you progress it builds and then you think you have hit the sweet spot and you get crushed. And again like most of you, after a while, I didn’t even notice the graphics. If it was anything other than a turn based game, I may have felt differently, but compared to ASCII it is spectacular!!!

In other news, if you dig a good roguelike and maybe played Cardinal Quest, the sequel is out and I like it a bunch as well. You can also play it on Kongregate.

Which one of you bastards has gotten to the third floor and how in God’s name did you do it?

I’ve done it with the warrior, the thief, and the wizard. But I haven’t won third level yet.
I think the thief was the easiest one.
Careful culling of bad cards (Attack 1, and to some extent Slice) and adding some of the better attack cards to flesh out really long strings of action cards did the trick. Oh, and be sure to get an equipment slot or two. Having nice equipment already played when combat starts really helps and acts as a semi-cull of your deck. Boots of Speed are awesome. Awesome.

I really, really hate Gelatinous Cubes. I’ve lost oh so many promising guys to that nigh-impossible bastard.

Yeah I have been close with the Warrior and I had few stronger cards and upgraded or culled all my Attack 1 cards. Some of it is what 2nd Level Boss you draw, too and how it matches up (or doesn’t) with what you have in your deck, obviously. I got one that was seemingly resistant to everything.

I faced an elite on the second floor that actually seemed unbeatable. It was some kind of hag- each turn she replaced all of my cards, all of them, with curses. So…yeah.

edit: By the way, if you find yourself tempted to unlock the professor, let me tempt you more by saying he’s amazing.

Stupid genie’s can eat a bowl of dicks.

EDIT: The Phoenix can eat multiple bowls.

So I’m on board the Dream Quest Hype Train. Fantastic game. First phone game I’ve binged on in a long time. I’m ok with the art being bad, but is everyone else playing on iPad? The interface and hitboxes for clicking on my 5S are terrible. Doesn’t seem like it is designed for the 5 or 5s at all? Makes playing difficult as clicking on things is a pain, but the mechanics for the game are just great.

I haven’t made it past the 3rd level yet either, but did just unlock the Samurai so going to give it a whirl next.

Looking at the screenshots, I’m having trouble getting past the literal stick figure art in some areas.

the problem is you’re looking at screenshots and not just playing the game already :P

The iphone 5 version was using the layout for the ipad version at one point, not sure if that has been fixed yet. I’m on a 4

You guys have won me over, dream quest is downloading now. It’s nice that a game with shocking art can still do well, gives me hopes for any future game endeavours of mine.

I figure the game is getting enough attention that he’ll hire (or partner with) an artist to redo the graphics. I’ll play it in 6 months time with the 2.0 version.

So my biggest problem appears to be that I stubbornly kept playing the priest class in my first six or seven games. And maybe I just don’t know the way to play the priest, but I got my butt kicked often by lvl2s and 3s. With the thief and the warrior I have had fewer problems, although I still haven’t beaten the first floor boss. So close!

A PT member stated that he’s currently testing the beta version of the upcoming patch, so the fix should be in the next update.

I’m finding it impossible to play on my 5S. Sometimes an info screen comes up that no amount of clicking will dismiss, and I have to force quit the game and start again. Other times (such as the intro’s character descriptions) the entire screen appears to be unresponsive for a minute or two, but eventually I can click through it. Once I’m in the game proper it seems to be ok, although one of the priest cards that I played led to a zero response situation (end move didn’t light up, nothing else worked).

So I’ve shelved it for now, hopefully it gets some special phone attention. Fortunately I also downloaded Fairway Solitaire, and holy crap is that addictive.

On level three for the first time! Very nerve wracking as I don’t know what to expect. Fought a sphinx and a giant down here so far. The abilities for sale in the shops are insane. My thief feels pretty all-powerful so I imagine this won’t end well…

I’ve made it to level three a couple of times. But how the f*ck do I make it even TO the level three boss is beyond me.
The dev said on pockettactics that his three most trusted testers all finished (beat level three, I suppose) within a few tries.
They’re clearly much, much better than I am.
Any advanced tips?

Using a thief, I loaded up on action-giving, card-drawing and defense cards…by the time I hit level three, I was basically cycling through my whole deck during some turns (maybe 20 cards total) - destroying 200 ho efreeti in 2 turns! Every other outing has ended terribly at the first or second boss so it was just a matter of it all coming together at once.

I’d highly recommend only taking new cards that will be worthwhile in the latter rounds and ignoring anything else. Took me a while to get used to rejecting a lot of the treasure cards and saving money for the better shop cards.

Also beware the Phoenix if you get it as the level two boss. Not sure how I could have beat it if I didn’t have all my free actions as a thief.
