Oh forgot to say that I was able to trounce level three pretty handily with the cards I had built up, taking down a titan as my end boss. Coup de grace was an awesome finisher!

Finally made it to level two with a wizard! Slow and steadily getting better it seems.

Victory! After a hilarious run as a professor, I chose a samurai and finally beat level 3!!!

Because I’ve won, I am officially declaring this game to be balanced.

The secret to my success? Well, let’s just say I had a wonderful little dungeon delve.

It’s a lot of fun. I have played a bunch this past long weekend. I think Monk is by far the easiest class, between the built-in forget ability and the early-acquired “all damage is piercing” buff.

The Hydra was my level 2 boss and we got to a point where he couldn’t hurt me since I went through almost my entire deck each turn including the card that gives you 15 points of healing/shielding, and the ability that monsters get in long fights to get extra cards doesn’t work for him, but I couldn’t do 90 points in a turn. I only won because I had a Deck of Wonders and I just saved the few super-powerful cards I got until I happened to get some that added to 90.

Read the devs tips over at Pockettactics. Good stuff there.

I reached the 100 deaths Achievement, so there’s that.

So how do you kill the Phoenix? I had a great run going and put the thing down a number of times. Am I supposed to kill it in one turn while it is in egg form?

You got it. I found the thunderstorm spell useful for that purpose, as it gives you an extra turn if you cast it with a lot of mana. My final boss was the Phoenix…

More dream quest talk:

I had a really interesting final boss fight against the hydra today. I basically spammed penance and fire shield (I think it’s called fire shield, the one that deals damage for every attack card the opponent plays) over and over to the point that penance damage got to about 90 per turn (and growing by 11) and he was taking 20 damage each attack he played. My monk had sufficient shielding/healing to deal with the remaining damage I got. Since the hydra regens full 150 health each turn, for most of the game all he had to do was make sure he discarded enough attack cards to make sure he didn’t kill himself (from fire shield damage). To the AI’s credit he did this for about 20 rounds. Once it reached a climax though, the hydra couldn’t play any attack card without killing himself, and he just froze there at the start of his turn until the game crashed. It was quite funny when you consider the confusion of the AI at this decision. Anyway, I tried it again, got to the same point, and he decided to play an attack card and kill himself. I wish there was an achievement for making the AI suicide.

The whole graphics hooplah really is misdirection here, this has to be the most interesting and engaging game I have played on iOS (with that said, only played FTL on PC).

HA! Awesome.

I have not had a single crash and that is the first crash I have heard of. I can’t remember the last time I played a game this much and personally never had a single crash.

No problem with the conversation here so far, but it seems like there should just be a Dream Quest thread. (I would start it, but I’ve played only a handful of games so far and don’t have a lot to say other than that the priest was a cruddy choice to try to start with. Or maybe everyone’s cruddy until you earn some achievements.)

Picked up Battleheart Legacy last night and really digging it so far. Think Battleheart (real time), but as an RPG where you control a single character.

Skills are grouped into classes/occupations, but you can learn any skill as long as you meet the stat requirements. So, for instance, I’m using a mix of Paladin, Warrior, and Bard skills so far. The Bard’s first ability (charm) makes encounters much easier in the early going.

Some random encounters, but not many thus far. Conversations have multiple options, and there are supposedly quest lines that can open up based on what you say&do.

Graphics are cartoonish, but very polished. Item choices are reflected on your character, which is nice.

No idea how long the campaign is.

I was eyeing this, so thanks for the impressions. Are you playing on a phone, and if so, its it hard to control? Does the combat require a lot of finger dexterity?

Started playing this today and it’s very good. The controls are also very well done. Playing on iPad.

I’m getting a feel for Battleheart Legacy too - trying out a mage right now. Had to do a little bit of ‘flame staff & back up, rinse/repeat’ a bit but it looks great so far. I wouldn’t have minded the ability to run with two character parties but I’ll take what I can get.

BTW, Dream Quest crashes for me all the time on my iPad 1. It lets me restart from the end of the last battle, so not too big a deal, but annoying.

Haven’t tried it on a phone yet, sorry. I didn’t play the original game much because of the madness of trying to control multiple characters. Only having to deal with one simplifies things a great deal. They do like to throw multiple enemies at you (as many as 5 fairly early), so there can be a bit more craziness dealing with multiple enemies, but nothing like having to also select which character you want.

I like dream quest a lot. I haven’t beat the 2nd tier boss yet, but I love how playing a recycle thief deck reminds me of getting a practically permanent turn in ascension by using draw cards. Quite fun.

I bought this (Battleheart: Legacy) last week and am absolutely loving it. It hits that sweet spot for me in terms of a lite ARPG that’s perfect for mobile gaming, yet there’s depth in tactics and weapon/skill choices and such. The dungeons at times kick my ass, but in a good way: after I die I’m itching to jump back in and try again. The art style is cartoony, but thankfully no doe-eyed anime kids.

Highly recommended.

The modern classic platformer VVVVVV is out on iOS (and Android).

Lots of good iOS games on sale right now, including Lords of Waterdeep.
