We put this together, if it helps. All of the entries are on both iOS and Android, from what I can remember.
The single player mode of Age of Rivals was a great plane companion, for a couple of very long trip.
Concrete Jungle is very absorbing, if you can manage to crack open its code (it took me litterally years of tries before I understood how it works).
The Sorcery games are incredible RPGs, but I do not know how you envisage your public activities (they require you to be able to concentrate to enjoy them). There is a pack with the 4 of them.
On the same level, my favourite companion has been Sentinels of the Multiverse and its expansions for years, but only once the lights have been turned off and the food plateau turmoil ceased.
Otherwise, there are the classic games that turn hours into minutes, like Dream Quest or FTL.
I don’t know how you feel about playing board games against AI, but there are a ton of good ones on iPad. Pathfinder ACG alone will last you dozens of hours. X-Com would be another good one.

Maybe Stardew Valley, if you’re into that. Personally, I’ve been playing XCOM: Enemy Within and Darkest Dungeon when I’ve been travelling with my iPad lately.
There is Hoplite: fantastic light strategy.
And my all-time favorite: Imbroglio.
Hoplite, I guess, but… Imbroglio?! That’s the epitome of one finger phone gaming! Putting this on a tablet is a sacrilege, sir!
Nah, greatness fits well on any screen size.
Bacon - The Game is the latest silly physics thing from Phillip Stollenmeyer, who made previous games about flipping pancakes and stacking burgers. It’s very silly, and you know you want to put bacon on everything anyway.

I love Imbroglio but i suck at it so badly.
The awesome thing about Brough’s games is the margin of progression though.
Reading this feature on Pockettactics, I learned about a few games I had never heard about, one of which is Pathos: Nethack Codex. I have only just dabbled with it. The interface was a bit problematic on the phone, but on the tablet, it’s one of the best roguelike interfaces I have experienced, if not the best. Very impressive first impression.

I grabbed this and am stuck. Has anybody played this before? Can you tell me if this is a bug or something? I can’t interact with anything but it seems like I should have won the dungeon. How do I move on?

Can’t drag any cards to the discard box?

Oh, that’s what that thing is. I must have forgotten about it after my tutorial.
That fixed it, thanks.
It’s also the main scoring mechanic.
Baseball 2045 got a basic online multiplayer function!
It’s not asynchronous (yet), but there is basic game browser and private games can be hosted.

As did I! When I got stuck like that I would just restart. Thanks!
A couple of games, I found to be on sale on this Friday:
XCOM Enemy Within for 2 bucks:
Since the wonderful Civilization Revolution has been pulled, I grabbed Civilization Revolution 2, for 2 bucks as well. I’m hoping it will be as good.
For the buggy Xenoshyft, its expansion Dreadmire is on sale for 2 bucks, again, for the first time. The base game is on sale as well, I am guessing. I am fearing the expansion might make the game even more buggy, oh well!

XCom and Civ Rev 2 have been upgraded to 64 bit then? 2K has supported them and kept them up today and running? I will have to check them out, thanks.
Everyone seemed to be saying Rev 2 was basically just an updated graphical version IIRC. So it should be good if you liked the first one.
