I remember there being a mess around the initial release of XCOM being left in the void after some iOS update. I don’t know if Enemy Within is just an update to it or an entirely separate release in the (a bit dirty) way of CivRev 2, but it works perfectly on iOS 12 (and doesn’t even make the iPad sweat).

I grabbed this little thing as well.

It is a clone of a lot of pay2play Japanese games, without the pay2play element.
You craft gears to equip your dudes to send on expedition to get more crafting material to craft gear… nothing really new, but it is quite well done (although the interface is a bit finicky if you don’t have Stusser’s TV in your pocket) and… I may have spent 3 hours of my time before and after sleep on it. I think it may not autosave (I should really test that).

1 buck instead of 3 for now.

They updated it no fuss no muss without any fanfare which was a pleasant surprise. I have been playing it for years and thought it would not make it through the 64 bit apocalypse.

Originally there was also a pure XCOM app as well (without enemy unknown) but that version was withdrawn and never updated.

I bought three on Black Friday sales, for a total of $5: X-COM, Motorsport Manager 3, and Pocket City (Sim City clone that gets good reviews). They should keep me busy for quite a while. So far I’ve only tried Pocket City, and am impressed with the UI and tutorial.

Here’s a fairly long list of Black Friday iOS sales from Touch Arcade. I think most of the deals are still good.

Pocket Tactics also did a run down on BF deals:

I completed my first game in two hours of time-warping fun (really didn’t see the clock go), and everyone is right: it really feels like Civ Rev. Everybody is at war all the time, none of that diplomacy sillyness! The game autosaves each turn.
My only complaint is the inability to skip unit animations.

Is XCom Enemy Within standalone? The description said it is an expansion. Does it need a base game?

It’s standalone. I never could get the damn thing running on my Kindle sigh

It confused me as well at first, but it’s really the full game with its expansion.
I ran into the floor bugs (present on the PC as well, so it’s a faithful port!) @midnight.mangler mentionned in another thread, right from the expansion tutorial, but otherwise it is very impressive.

I bought it, but that is a nice reminder of a huge annoyance of the game. Can’t believe they never fixed that.

Bought! Thanks guys!

I picked up One Deck Dungeon as it’s on sale and I’ve debated getting the physical version for a while now. I’ve played a handful of games so far and I’m not sure what I think. First off, for some reason it takes about a minute for the character selection screen to pop up after I hit new game. Secondly, thus far it seems like a game extremely dependent on luck but maybe as I play more the strategic elements will seem to make more of a difference?

Want to add that XCOM EW is not scaled to iPhone Xs Max. But it still look and play well. Just with black bars.

There is a progression (a cheating sheet!) system, but the game is more about getting acquainted to each character’s strengths, and knowing your enemy. The game is very heavily luck dependent, in that you hardly can do anything for instance if you have a terrible, terrible throw against a boss, but you can mitigate it enough most of the time, so that winning becomes the rule and losing becomes the exception.
It’s a shame about that extended loading time. It isn’t present on the PC version.

That extended load time wasn’t there before, so it must be one of the updates that broke it. Hopefully they’ll fix it soon.

I’m running it on an iPad Air so maybe it is my older device but the rest of the game seems to run fine, it’s just that. 1 screen that has issues

I beat the 1st dungon last night for the first time using 2 heroes (Archer/Paladin). This was my first time using 2 instead of just the Archer and it seemed much easier. I don’t know if this was due to luck or it’s just easier with 2 then 1. It defintely seems like a faster way to progress the characters compared to playing 1 hero at a time. I was suprised it didn’t make my split my progression checkmarks at the end of the game.

I played the shit out of One Deck Dungeon when the app first came out, to the point where I had to force myself to stop and play other things. I own the physical game also, but can’t imagine going back to it.

The one thing I didn’t enjoy about XCOM EW is that I have to sit through the intro logos screen (Unreal Engine, Ubisoft and the rest) every time I play. Is there a way to by pass it?

Strongly recommend Rebel Inc., a lite political/war game from the makers of the revered Plague Inc. Rebel Inc. was just released and is on sale for only two bucks, but the price may go up shortly (to what, I don’t know. $5, maybe?).

Anyway, it is akin to the Vietnam '65 in that you are trying not to defeat the enemy, but overcome an insurgency by winning the hearts and minds of the people (in this case, the people of a fictitious land). Unlike the other game, it is real time, though with pausing. I find it very easy to control on an iPad, very addictive, and very difficult. The iap is apparently only to unlock maps that you will unlock for free when you complete the previous map.
