How many of those are there? I seem to recall one of the Civs was crazy expensive on iOS, and maybe some wargames.

Not many, but the Civs, XComs, etc. I guess I am reluctant to spend any amount of money on iOS games anymore.
Most I’ve spent on any mobile game is ten bucks I think.
I was thinking the same thing. 2013 is an old game? Why, I’ll show you some old games!
It probably doesn’t help that it’s deliberately designed to look like an old game.
Game is wonderful, as it’s always been I am guessing. The “changes” section is also a thing of beauty on its own!
Has anyone played an old-Ultima style RPG called Dungeons of Chaos? Seems like a pretty massive game that would require a good time investment, so wondering if others found it worthwhile.
It’s also on Steam these days: DUNGEONS OF CHAOS on Steam
I’ve had it for years. I think it was the first game it got for iOS back when I switched over to an iPhone. It seems really deep and very ultima-like. I just have never put in the time to play it. For me, the phone is good for small bursts of playing. Not some longer session that something like this game requires.

Right, as I understood it, the original creator of Pixel Dungeon made his source code public domain and moved on, not wanting to spend any more time on the project. Then this extreme fan-boy programmer took up the slack and both addressed holes in the original design and then added a bunch of interesting new stuff while doing a pretty damn fine job of sticking to the feel of the original.
One of the minor fixes in SPD (Shattered Pixel Dungeon) over the original is how it handles the description of enchanted items. In the original, you could get a full description of any item BUT…if you find out later that “dagger” is in fact a “Dagger of Flame”, clicking on the dagger still only gives you the description of a generic dagger. None of the game’s many cool enhancements were explained in-game. In SPD, items, be they standard or with cool enchantments, are fully described with no need to look up stuff out of the game.
So Battle for Wesnoth which has I believe been mentioned in glowing terms appears to be free, at least on the NZ App Store.
Edit: it wasn’t only a few days ago.

Can anyone recommend a good resource for child appropriate ipad games that aren’t add infested, free to play, sponsored, microtransaction bloated piles of complete shit? Fuck it is just a shit show of millions of F2P scammy bloatware crap piles where every other ‘level’ of a game presents a new add for a different F2P and often inappropriate dogshit app.
Target age is 6-10. More than happy to pay for apps.

Apple Arcade? Not so much kids games, but there are some. Everything in there is pretty tame, and there is enough there to keep a kid busy for days. No ads, IAP, etc.

Thanks, that looks the business to start with.
This seems like a great idea for a startup, heavily curated, kid friendly. There has got to be a huge market for this.

That is kind of what Apple Arcade is. It’s not directly for kids, but almost everything is very family friendly, high quality, and there aren’t any IAP for your kids to go crazy on. There isn’t a bunch of stuff I want to play (but there are some great games), but if I was a kid, I would go crazy with the selection.
Subscribed to Arcade, will take my boy through it tomorrow.
The app store seems to have become child unfriendly wasteland of IAP, add supported drivel over the last couple of years. One second your kid’s playing some random cut-the-rope knock-off, then before you realise it they are pretend massaging womens backs in an inter-level interactive ad, in a not-so-unsexual context. Apple’s curation has really slipped.

Yeah, the App Store has been a shit show for years now. I only use review sites, forums, and podcasts to find new apps/games anymore.
Not to mention the alleged search function is utterly useless. Every search pretty much returns the same assortment of nearly identical terrible rip-off time wasters. Oh wait, maybe that IS all there is on the store. So perhaps not the search engine’s fault!
No, really, the search function is bad.

Second on the Apple Arcade recommendation for this and glad you jumped on that @sharaleo. There are a lot of + versions of popular games from the regular app store but stripped of ads and in-app purchases. And I’d say there are LOTS of games on there appropriate for ages 6-10.
Toca Boca makes brilliant exploratory games and experiences for kids on mobile, with no IAP. Your oldest has probably outgrown their style, but your youngest is probably still in their target age. Definitely check them out.
