Hi guys. A quick question from a total noob in both tactics games and iOS:

Can anyone recommend an accessible tactics/role playing game in the vein of Fire Emblem or XCOM:EU? I’m looking for something turn-based and single player with a bit of persistence. A mode like XCOM’s Iron Man would be a bonus.

I’m sure there are tonnes of candidates but I’ve had no luck so far.

Did you try Ravenmark? The first campaign is free.

I loved Fire Emblem with all my heart, and found Ravenmark dull. And this is from the real Dave Perkins!

As did I. I don’t know of anything similar.

If anyone’s interested Gameloft just put gangstar rio city of saints and N.O.V.A. 3 out for free for a limited time.

Gangstar is a grand theft auto inspired game, and NOVA 3 is a halo inspired game. I find them fairly well done for ios games.

I don’t get it. Is that your new catchphrase? Are people outside media and fiction allowed to have a catchphrase? Note to self: Work on my catchphrase.

Tony

It is. And I should work on notes to self.

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of The Lions? I think it’s pretty expensive for an iOS game - like $15 or so…

I haven’t played it myself yet but have heard good things about Kingturn, it was even mentioned (positively) earlier in this thread. Like Ravenmark the prologue campaign is free but you will pay $5 or so for the full game.

yup, triple thumbs up for Kingturn. Easy to get into and yet so addictive. It may have been done already in other tactical games, but the idea of capturing enemy spawn points, (and your own spawn point being captured in turn) leads to fluid tactical situations.

There’s also Frozen Synapse…anyone try the iOS port?

I’ve really enjoyed the Frozen Synapse port. I played the PC version as well, but I think the iOS version is easier to use. In addition, it’s much easier to pick up and take a turn or two on multiplayer. It’s my go-to game on the iPad right now.

Been playing Frozen Synapse on iPad Mini without any problems. UI works well even on the small screen. Now just need to work out how to stop from being comprehensively thrashed!

Cheers

Possibly will re-awaken the Frozen Synapse league in June!

Ha ha, yeah. The AI is painting the walls with my stickmen.

Battle of the Bulge is on sale for $6.99 for a week. Also, there is a new “Lite” version that is free but restricts you to the short scenario. However, someone who owns the full scenario can invite you to play it even if you have the Lite version. It is all unlockable via IAP.

Why did you find it dull? The website sure is fancy.

I played for 3-4 hours and never felt like I made an interesting decision. And it didn’t seem like it would get much more interesting. If there’s a Lite version, though, brief reviews like mine are unimportant!

Isn’t it late May? Where is my Warhammer Quest? >=)

Been lots of gameplay videos coming out lately, hopefully that means its right around the corner.

I’m also waiting for Rob Gilbert’s Scurvy Scallywags. Supposedly it has been submitted to the App store. Its a pirate themed Match-3 game with RPG-ish elements.
