I am a little shocked that the XCOM port hasn’t gotten a lot more buzz. Perhaps everyone already played it on PC, but I haven’t so I was pretty thrilled to see it was out. I had to delete about 2 gigs worth of apps to fit it on my ipad 3. I played some of the tutorial last night and it ran flawlessly. The early reviews are good and they report that it appears to be a full fledged port of the original. How awesome is that?
How does the Warhammer iOS game gets its own thread and XCOM iOS gets squat?
I suspect it is the price and most people that own it already do not want to pay that high (in iOS terms of price) for another run through of the game. Thus, there is not a lot of discussion on it at this point in time. When it eventually goes on sale I would think more people may grab it.
That’s pretty much it for me. I enjoyed xcom, but I finished it, and I’m not paying $20 for another copy. I am curious how well the controls work on a touchscreen.

If XCOM was more replayable, more people would be picking it up on the new platform, I’d guess. But even LESS maps and otherwise the same old canned campaign experience?
Maybe I’d still be tempted, the “steamlined” gameplay suits my mobile gaming habits better (as far as I even have them), but I only own an iPod 4, which is not supported - even if it were, I’d have to be able to get it for like 75% off.

The effort to produce a console quality game is admirable, and I applaud them for it. Unfortunately I still haven’t played the PC version, and I would rather play the PC version over the iOS version.
Even LESS maps? I just wanted to comment that if they added more maps, I would probably re-buy it even for $20, lol. No way I am paying that much for “less”.
P.S. I still appreciate the effort to port a full game to iPad though. I guess it’s just a classic example of “too little, too late”.
How is it the “full” version if it has less maps?
“Our version has less maps” doesn’t sell as well as “full version”.

So I bought XCOM on 360 (sank only a couple of hrs into it but got distracted).
Then, I got a free steam copy because of some amazon deal on some other game I bought.
Then, I got it free on ps3 b/c of playstation plus.
Do I really want to fork out $20 for a 4th copy? I’m actually a tad tempted out of curiosity.

I picked it up last night. It plays really well with the touchscreen. One thing I noticed was I couldn’t change the color of the armor like I could on the PC version. Makes telling the specialties of my soldiers at a glance a little more difficult. Not a huge problem though.

XCOM is interesting… most people who would dig into a big game like that probably have a gaming device other than an iPad. While I’m sure the game is worth $20, the question is whether those $$ are best spent on the iPad version. For my money, I’d probably rather play on the PC or PS3. For $10, I might also pick it up for the iPad, but not for $20.

Yep, I played through it 2 and 1/2 times and enjoyed every minute of it and do want to pick it up again, but I am having trouble justifying the $20 for an iPad version when I could just boot it back up on my PC. It will be on my watch list for a sale, though.

Obviously not everyone is going to jump at the chance to play XCOM on their Apple devices for $20, but for me this was money well spent. The interface is very nice, and between the controller, the mouse & keyboard, and the touchscreen I’ve gotta say that the touchscreen is the easiest method for deploying those fiddly grenades/rockets. Really though the main appeal for me is being able to get a mission or two in during my lunch break at work.

I kind of want to get X-Com on iOS as well, but can’t quite justify it for a game I already own and have played all the way through (though, admittedly only once). Having a portable version would be amazing. I think I would be more inclined if I felt there was more replayability in the game itself. I’ll probably get it when/if it ever goes on sale.
A co-worker bought it and he’s having a blast with it so far. He never played the PC or Console version, for what its worth.
(Seemed more appropriate for here rather than bargains thread. Apologies to any detractors of much-hated green mermaid, and to any for whom this is old news.)
Starbucks Coffee’s ongoing “pick of the week” program offers one free app per week via company’s own mobile app in tandem with in-store wifi. In other words, physically setting foot inside one of Starbucks’ many fine establishments required, apparently.
According to review site SlideToPlay.com, this week’s free app: the usually 99-cent game Bike Baron.
Have not participated in program and likely will not do so personally, but figured it might be of interest to any secret Starbucks regulars on lookout for freebies.
I picked up iOS XCOM even though I already have it on PC and PS3 (PS+ freebee). I wanted a mobile version for replayibility. I’m on an iPad 3rd Gen.
Though, yes, it is the same game, my first impression was that the graphics look terrible. I would much rather have had 2K downgrade the retina resolution in trade for better shaders. Every thing just seems flat diffuse with vertex shading and washed out. There don’t appear to be any reflection or specular rendering passes. It really kills the look of the game. (For me anyway.)
For example, in the first mission there’s that part where the German soldier is being controlled by the alien in the warehouse. On the PC and PS3, you don’t see his face until the XCOM soldier walks up to him and shines the overhead light on him. On iOS, you see him un-shaded the entire time. No shadow on his face at all. Having known the “real” reveal, it was kinda comic.
Also, there’s a bit of frame hitching during gameplay. Oddly the underground base looks great and scrolls very smoothly.
Other than that, it looks like a decent port. If you aren’t picky about graphics fidelity, it’s the same XCOM. (Minus some maps, I hear.)

The controls seem off on Puzzle Pirates, I cant put my finger on why, maybe not responsive enough?
