For those who don’t hit the bargain thread, a bunch of indie developers have put a bunch of stuff on sale in the App Store through June 1st. The sale is called Because We May and I’ve linked to the iOS part of the sale. Highlights include:
Avadon the Black Fortress 50% off at $4.99
Rebuild for $0.99 (instabuy, worth every penny)
Great Little War Game for $0.99
Scrap Metal for $0.99 (fun little racing game)
Anomoly WarZone Earth HD for $1.99
Swords and Soldiers HD for $1.99
New World Colony $FREE (no idea, but it looks interesting)
Um, to not call out Waking Mars as a highlight is a crime.
I would also recommend Frederick: Resurrection of Music. A strange music game about Chopin being brought back to life to fight modern music.
Unrelated, Rockstar put GTA 3 and Chinatown Wars HD down to $1 each.
How do you guys end up with 20,000+ points in Neuroshima Hex? I had a pretty flawless game on hard (mostly lucky because the outpost opponent kept drawing movement tiles for half the game) and I only ended up with 4300.
All you have to do is play five times!
Thanks for the heads-up on the $80 iTunes card and the Because We May sale. Between those two, I am set for a long weekend of sitting around a lot at a swim meet!
Hey Tom, it’s cool! I already mentioned this in the iPhone thread! But since it’s universal, I’m mentioning it here too:
I was going to come tell you about Oh! Cube because it was on sale for $.99, but it’s actually free today, so you don’t even need to read the rest of this if you’re quick!
If it costs money again by the time you read this, I’m sorry I didn’t mention it earlier in the day, but it’s basically a 3D picross game. I’m aware that there was an actual 3D picross game on the Nintendo DS, which I sadly have not played, so I can’t say how it compares directly. I’ve always enjoyed the picross games in all forms though, and this is no exception. I’m still on the simpler puzzles, but it’s already enough to scratch $.99 worth of my picross itch.
It’s not perfect. On the iPhone, it can be a little maddening to get it to register your taps on the cubes. Perhaps this is less of a problem on the larger iPad screen, but it’s definitely an occasional nuisance on the phone. The positive spin would be that I’ve never accidentally tapped a cube I didn’t intend, so it’s never penalized me in the game.
Anyway. Picross! Go!
Fans of Jetpack Joyride and other endless runners should check out Zombie Ace, a currently free-to-play game that has you piloting a jetliner full of zombies across the US. (I think it might be a 99c app once the promotion ends).
I find the artwork very good on the iPad, and overall the entertainment value is quite high. It’s a bit easier than Jetpack Joyride in that it’s much harder to die, but you do run out of fuel, and…well, here’s the biggest drawback to Zombie Ace.
You can upgrade your plane through coins (which you get in game) and brains (which you get very sparingly in game, or as IAP). To progress beyond a certain point in the game you’re going to need brains, as your plane only carries a set amount of fuel. There’s no way to convert coins to brains, and while you can get a few brains each day by watching ads, the developers really want you to buy IAP.
I’ve put about two hours in, and I like it enough that I’ll pop in to watch the ads and play a few times every day. I much prefer it to Jetpack Joyride in that it’s more relaxing and I still haven’t seen all the content; however, at this rate it might be a few months before I do finish it (and unlike other endless runners, there does seem to be an “end” to this game…getting to New York.)
Ipad 3 question:
I have the iPad 1 with 16 gb. I am at the point that I have to move apps I am not using to make room for newer ones.
I am planning to start saving for an iPad 3 but which model 16 or 32 gb? Are games getting bigger in size over time? That extra hundred dollars could go into a smart cover/case etc.
I figure any purchase has to last about three years so it is not such an easy decision. Extra app space or better cover/case?

Apps are getting bigger with the retina assets. I would recommend the upgraded storage, since that isn’t something you can increase later.

Yeah IMO the 32 is the sweet spot. 16 is fine if you don’t use many apps.
You can get a decent cover or case for under $30.
I just got a great case I love off monoprice for $18. I keep having to remind myself to always check monoprice.

Ditto, Welder is quite good.
It’s like Beleweled and Scrabble got together to have a little steampunk baby.
