Titan HD is now on sale and they released a patch addressing the issues with game speed and tactical battle feedback. They plan to patch in multiplayer in the future as well.
I forgot to mention that’s the first game on my list.
I just mean I don’t want Carcassone or Ticket to Ride or all those Euro-boardgames that sound super interesting but I’m not ready to commit to right now. Give me some grognardy stuff or some elegant strategy game stuff. I don’t know, hopefully a strategy gamer will figure out what I’m trying to say. Bruce might be able to give me his list.
Find me a rock.
That’s really annoying given that Bruce just reviewed the unpatched version. Damn developers.

OK. Well, in addition to NH!, take a peek at Tigris and Euphrates, and indeed, the other Knizia conversions.

Carcassone actually is really simple but requires some strategery. Not trying to change your mind there, but it only takes 5 minutes to learn (well, if you read the rules) and provides a lot of variety. It’s an entirely different game when playing vs. different numbers of people. The AI is good, too.
It’s not the learning but the subsequent temptation to dive into the genre. I’m keeping that one at arm’s length for now to manage my time.

Can you provide a link to the article are you talking about that made you consider iPad strategy games?
It’s Bruce’s review of Titan HD on the front page of QT3.

Thanks - I’ve had my head buried in work today and missed that.

Yeah, I’d like to see a revised take. Worth at least an extra star I’d imagine.

Posting from my phone at work, so excuse brevity. My two biggest complaints with Titan are actually bad AI and no multiplayer. I’m glad that they have patched in some speed controls, if that’s what they did, but from my perspective, I still have no reason to play the AI, so until there is multiplayer I won’t be picking the game up again. Maybe an extra half-star :)
Tim, if you want a really “grognardy” iPad game that totally shows off the iPad without actually being a grognardy wargame, try Puerto Rico. It’s a very deep game that actually plays better on the iPad against AI than it does in person because against real people it is susceptible to analysis paralysis while solo you don’t have to wait for anyone. There is a good help system (drag a question mark over anything to explain it) which doubles as a hint button. There is no asynchronous multiplayer but you wouldn’t want it. If you’re looking for a deep game you can explore and use the iPad as an enhancement tool, this is it. Although who knows if you’ll like the actual game.
And I definitely second the Neuroshima Hex recommendation.
Rob, sorry for the delay - I have been busy and I missed the “Your Turn” email. I’ll do another couple turns tomorrow when I get home from work.
Thanks. A grognardy wargame is okay too, as long as it’s good and not completely impenetrable. I’ll check out Puerto Rico, and I’m already certain I’ll have fun with NH.

It’s not really grognardy at all - it’s just a deep game that is also elegant and plays so much better on the iPad. And the AI is good. I actually play it more than any other iPad game except Ascension.
I actually don’t know of any grognardy iPad wargames, at least until they release Conflict of Heroes.

Tim (and everyone) if you dig Puerto Rico (and I agree that it’s great), check out the free Race For The Galaxy AI game for the PC. Not iPad, but I had to bring it up because it is so awesome (and an expansion on Puerto Rico’s design).
Oh, I get what you’re saying now that I re-read the sentence. I didn’t want you to think I was against something grognardy.
I believe we’re way over the monthly quota for that adjective now. Tom will have to pay extra if we continue this line of discussion.
I downloaded it a while back. It never hooked me, possibly because when I sit down to my PC I expect a different kind of game (like Bruce mentioned in the article today). If PR is similar, I’m curious to see if playing it on the iPad helps me.

Not sure if RftG was developed before Puerto Rico was released, but it’s more directly related to San Juan, the card game version of Puerto Rico. So much so that apparently RftG designer Tom Lehmann gave them permission to use the mechanic he developed for RtfG in San Juan before RftG was published.
Speaking of RftG, has anyone heard any news on the digital version? (I don’t think they specifically said iOS in the original announcement but everyone assumes it will be.) That’s definitely at the top of my list of most anticipated board game ports.
Also, thanks for the heads up on the Titan sale. I guess I should go read Bruce’s review but having heard him discuss it on Three Moves Ahead a few weeks back I think I can anticipate his take on it.
Would Battle Academy qualify?
(I haven’t played it myself yet, it’s on my maybe-list.)
Ravenclaw? (Edit: I meant Ravenmark.)

I’ve played the first 2 scenarios of Battle Academy and so far it seems very wargame light to me. I’m disappointed by that, since I thought it was supposed to be a heavy wargame. Really my fault for not trying the demo and doing more research. Also, I find the UI to be very finicky about selecting and deselecting units. Many times I have accidentally moved the wrong unit or issued the wrong orders.

I posted a review of Battle Academy, with screenshots, on my blog: http://tleaves.com/node/4
I think it’s not really wargame-light. I think it looks wargame light while actually being fairly subtle. The opportunity fire mechanic in my mind is what takes it over the top into being a serious wargame.
But, it’s presented in a cartoony and friendly way, y’know? I think that’s good.

I has ben playing for a few days now “Spice Pirates”. Its a turret defense game, with Player versus Player and coop modes. You can have a 4vs4 players game :D
