What is this I don’t even

I don’t want anybody else. When I think about this, iCombat Mission Touch myself.

Are there any decent logic puzzle games like sudoku or picross or slitherlink that aren’t sudoku, picross, or slitherlink? Something in feel to the Evertt Kaiser’s games would be great, but the couple he has are for the iPhone, not iPad.

There is spacechem … But beyond that, I think the Everett kaiser games are it.

Combat mission for $5 or Battle Academy for $20. The Slytherine guys have to be pissed off this morning.

Combat mission only comes with 7 scenarios whereas BA comes with about 30 I believe (an a ton of free user made scenarios). If scenario packs are a couple of bucks each then you’ll soon have paid more than $20 for combat mission.

Puzzlemaniak HD is a pretty excellent collection of twenty puzzles adapted from the Simon Tatham collection: Slant, Tents, Filling, Galaxies, Map, Light Up, Rectangles, Bridges, Dominosa, Net, Pegs, Black Box, Untangle, Same Game, Unequal, Loopy (Slitherlink), Pattern (Picross), Guess (Mastermind), Mines (Minesweeper), and Solo (Sudoku).

Each puzzle is randomly generated with multiple difficulty levels, and there are also online competitions via a timed daily challenge.

And BA comes with a random skirmish scenario, so arguably a great amount of replay value, albeit somewhat random.

I don’t have CM:Touch, but there is no mention of a skirmish scenario being included.

I started grinding Neuroshima Hex achievements on my wife’s Game Center account, but I should probably make my own at this point. I assume if I ever get my own iPad, I can use iTunes to transfer any local files and save states I’ve accumulated, right? Just trying to plan ahead.

Check out Skyline. Have you tried Nurikabe? Star Wars Pit Droids? My current obsession is LightUp, which is an iPhone game, but looks better on iPad than most.

Check out the PathPix games. There are actually quite a few others as well, but I don’t have my device here.

EDIT: Ah yes, Puzzlemaniak HD (mentioned above) is a total treasure trove. Skyline is good too.

Thank GOD! After two months glued to Kingdom Rush, I finally beat all the heroic and iron challenges. Now I can get this monkey off my back… just as soon as I replay the whole thing.

Damn it. I’m really trying to hold on to my iPad 1. Stuff like this is not going to make it easy.

Edit: To assuage my grief, I am considering either Ascendancy or Imperium Galactica II. Price is comparable. I am not familiar with either of the original PC games. Which one should I go with?

I knew I was forgetting something obvious. Ugh. Yes, Pathpix Pro is fantastic. A no-brainer purchase.

Not quite logic puzzles, but Aqueduct and Blockwick are both great puzzle games on iOS. Also check out “ensodot” for something a little more logic oriented. All of these games are made by the Kieffer Brothers.

Depends on your preferences. Overall, Ascendancy reminds me a lot of Space Empires IV, emphasizing variety and micromanagement. Spaceships have to be designed piece-by-piece, and in combat they have to be moved across the system in 3D. The strategic map is also 3D, similar to Sword of the Stars. Ascendancy has a ton of exotic races with unique abilities, spaceship art, and even theme music. Surprisingly, humans are not among them. In fact, there are very few humanoids at all - though the various tentacle creatures, gaseous blobs, insects, robots, and plant intelligences are quite inspired.

Imperium Galactica II, which I’ve yet to play on iPad, breaks significantly from the 4X mold. First, it’s real-time instead of turn-based. There is less variety than in Ascendancy but some interesting new mechanisms involving spying and heroes. There are also land battles in IG2, which are absent from most space 4x games. In my opinion, the closest comparison is the underrated Star Wars: Empire at War.

I may have missed it, but the original Ascendancy had horrible AI. Is the IPad version better in this regard?

Yes, Ascendancy for iOS includes an improved AI. I never played the original Ascendancy, but on iOS the AI is reasonably aggressive, defends its colonies, and keeps up with research and production.

I bought combat mission touch but haven’t played yet. It only has 6-7 scenarios (and no random battles) from what I can see so perhaps that explains the low price. Hope battlefront adds campaigns, more scenarios, etc

<sigh> The Ascendancy instructions don’t even tell me how to end a turn. Geezus.
