Thanks for the recommendation on SLAY.
Found a good dozen hours of playtime with it.
WITNESS THE WARBLADE HIGH SCORE SCREEN!!!

Suck it, krayzkrok! I’m coming for you next, Nahr!
Although the real surprise in that screenshot is that more of you don’t have Warblade. WTF? What a fantastic shooter! It’s easily the best iPhone shooter since Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, and it rivals even that one partly because it’s got so many cool unique features. Y’all get your names on that high score list.
Oh, and when you’re just starting out: you can go into options to turn off the default tilt controls for moving your ship. Egads, what a difference.

Oh, dear, I seem to have broken it…

That actually kinda sucked. I managed some sort of freakish money multiplier that let me max out my ships and basically hold down the fire button for about fifty levels. :(

That’s just freakish overkill, Tom. I hope you’re ashamed of yourself.

Picked up The Jim & Frank Mysteries. It’s a total Professor Layton ripoff, and a really good one for $.99.
Also got Hector Badge of Courage. Really enjoying that as well.
What the…!
Here I am ready to tell you that I’ve smashed your high scores, both of you, and you post THAT?!
The main worry with the game is picking up a weapon downgrade. I was at 9.5 million with 5 lives and fireballs, and in a swarm of ships I mistakenly picked up a single shot. As you can imagine, I didn’t last much longer. FWIW, final score 11,692,205.
Actually Tom, you’ve broken Open Feint as well! I can’t even log on anymore.
[edit]Ah, it has fixed itself. Clearly not Tom’s doing, given that the high scores for this game are in the billions. In fact Tom, I don’t think you’re even in the top 500 are you? I forget this game is all about getting insanely high scores by maxing everything out. We’re just amateurs at this stage. Just you wait…
Damn you, Tom Chick! Damn you to hell! :(
Yeah, accidentally picking up skulls or downgrades is the worst thing. I miss out on lots of goodies because they look like a downgrade, or because they are too close to one, or because I was cautious and stayed too far to the side of my targets. I don’t think I’ve seen this feature in any other shooter, by the way.
What controls are you guys using? I’m using the combined fire + movement button which is generally fine, except in meteor storms where it makes me speed up as soon as I try to move. I tried the digital option but wrapping my head around three (!!) different buttons seems to overtax my brain somehow.
I’m not sure what combination of boxes I ticked to get it the way I wanted it, but I’ve got a fire button on the left, then the left/right controls. It’s set to “digital” for maximum reaction speed. Then I start buying speed upgrades, and once it’s at max I’m happy.
All my games end the same way. I’m doing great until I hit a downgrade or die twice in a row, rendering my firepower completely useless at which point all my lives disappear in quick succession. Level 48 three times in a row now. Grrr.
The style with those three buttons is what the game calls “digital”. Rather confusingly, the options screen has three separate checkboxes for the three separate control styles… and the ones you don’t want are not deactivated automatically.

I’m digging Helsing’s Fire which is sort of an Auditorium like puzzle game but… not. It’s only a buck and just the introductory levels have shown a nice sense of humor and it’s yet another clean simple concept that works perfectly on the iphone. There are some framerate issues for slower devices but although you are scored on time it doesn’t seem like it ever gets “fast paced”.
Thanks Adree - I was waiting for that one. Just in time for a plane trip tomorrow.
Holy crap warblades is awesome, thanks for the recommendation!
…also, I think I’ve beaten the high scores so far :-)

You think?
Proof, man. We need proof. Add us to your friends list.
In other news, Helsing’s Fire is freakin’ awesome sauce. Neat shadow effects turned into a clever puzzle dynamic about illuminating various creatures in the right order and blasting them with a wave of righteous fire. And the game is as stylish as they come.

Dammit, I missed the free deal on Warblades.
Yes, now it will cost the princely sum of 99c. Go on, splash out a little.

I will second (or third) this. In fact I came here to post about it.
Hm, so it is. I guess the introductory price is over, pity.
