Here’s a bunch of mini-reviews of some recent purchases:
NHL 2K11 - A surprisingly good adaptation of hockey for the iphone. It’s like the good old days of playing NHL 98 on my computer (including the graphics). I’ve just played a few quick games so far, but the controls are solid and it feels like hockey. The graphics and sound are both sub-par, but they do their job. Worth the $0.99 sale price.
Angry Birds - It’s Angry Birds. If you haven’t played it, it really is as fun as everyone says.
Puzzle Agent (Nelson Tethers) - I like the art style and weird set-up for the story. The puzzles I’ve seen so far haven’t been anything mind-blowing but I’ll take a quirky puzzle-adventure with mediocre puzzles for $0.99.
DOOM II RPG - Has the same art-style as Wolfenstein RPG, which I don’t like as much as the style used in the first DOOM RPG (a “better” looking cartoon style vs. sprites based on the original DOOM graphics). The turn-based FPS gameplay and humour from the first DOOM RPG is still there though. When will “Orcs & Elves” get released on iphone?
Mirror’s Edge - Very nice graphics that faithfully recreate the aesthetic from the PC game. I also think they did an excellent job of finding a control method (swiping up/down to jump/slide, etc…) that works and maintaining a sense of “flow” while traversing the environment. One advantage over the PC version is the lack of crappy cutscenes between levels.
Monster Dash - So far this is my favourite “sprint” game. The art is cool, I’m a sucker for cheesy monster settings, and shooting adds just enough to the formula to keep me interested. Also, some of the upgrades are pretty rad (machine-gun jetpack, badass hog).
Super Mega Worm - I played a ton of “Death Worm” on my PC, which this is based on, except now it has sweet 8-bit graphics and even more things for the worm to eat. If a game where you basically play as one of the worms from “Tremors” sounds awesome then this is the game for you.
Pix’N Love Rush - This is the ultimate game for fans of faux 8-bit. The pixellated graphics and bleepy sound & music perfectly capture the retro aesthetic. When paired with great controls and fast-paced platforming they create something amazing. At $0.99 this is a steal.
