Are you not a fan of tower defense games? I’d say it’s one of the finest examples of the genre, on any platform, but I understand why someone who doesn’t dig tower defense games wouldn’t like it.

By the way, what is “a play-and-make numbers-get-bigger game”? Unless I’m misunderstanding you, that describes pretty much any videogame, with varying degrees of making the numbers interesting. I though Defender Chronicles did a great job making the numbers interesting by letting you “make them bigger” via leveling up and selecting bonuses, upgrading units during a match, and buying magic items. It’s pretty much classic RPG stuff applied to a tower defense game.

And I finished it. Once you figure out the first part the rest is pretty easy. I also got all the achievements. Tip: Use 1-18 for Master Finger.

I do like tower defence games. Working out the most efficient use of your tools is fun. But I didn’t feel like there was much of that at all in Defender Chronicles.

I initally struggled to figure out what the roles for the initial two different towers were. Or what role upgraded towers would play - which situation would you want an upgraded tower and which situation would you want multiple unupgraded? I ended up trying to look online, but to my horror every bit of strategy discussion about the game I could find revolved solely around which levels were the best for farming experience and gold.

I never did come to any conclusion to what were supposed to be good tactical decisions in those early levels, and I suspect there weren’t any. And then once I got the mage tower, the mage hero, and some mage ability upgrades, spamming them seemed to beat everything, so there was little decision making to be made there either.

It felt to me like the trickle of increased power and success through gifted rewards like experience and gold was supposed to replace the fun feelings of gaining mastery I expect from a game. “Classic RPG stuff” as you put it.

Monster Dash is now on Game Center! Also, new rocket launcher and Yeti Heights level.

Reiner Knizia’s “Samurai” is now universal. It’s pretty nice, especially on the iPad.

Guys, I have an iPhone 3G (so no Game Center for me). If I download an update for a game that adds Game Center support to it will I still be able to play the game? I know it’s probably a silly question but I don’t wanna take any risks.

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

The latest update breaks the shit out of the game. Enemies spawning in walls, blank screens, messed up savegames, and a super fucking annoying nonstop login prompt to one of those online game services I’ll never use.

Yes you will. My son and I play Angry Birds on the iPad and it doesn’t have the iOS 4.x update for it yet from Apple, but we can play the updated version of the game on it with no issues whatsoever. It just doesn’t show the extra Game Center icons on the main screen, like my phones version, so you (as long as they coded it well) should be good to go!

I liked Pinball HD enough that I also grabbed Slayer Pinball which is from the same folks. Pinball HD is the better deal right now as you get the 3 tables (Wild West, Jungle Style, and The Deep) for .99 (which oddly still also seem to be on sale individually for .99 each) as opposed to the 2.99 for Slayer Pinball. Same physic/graphics engine for both games which I find works well. Games have 3 cameras, a floating camera or full zoomed out camera when played with the iphone vertical, or if tilted horizontal an isometric camera. I wish you could use the floating camera horizontal as it’s just more comfortable to hold that way but overall I find they work well.

My one big complaint is that it prompts you for your name after every game it seems, which is sort of annoying.

So I just bought my favourite iPhone game of the month. Game Dev Story is an awesome menu driven game about game development. You hire a team, make games, and then ship them. The game spans from the MSX to the Wii, and it is fucking awesome.

You only see the office, never the games. But who gives a shit, it really is amazing. It all goes at a fast clip, so it’s really addictive.

That looks really cool, Kurdel. I’ll check it out!

Can you layoff a majority of your programmers and artists once the game has gone gold?

I’m not a big pinball fan but I love Pinball HD. A great little time waster for when you’re waiting for service at a busy restaurant.

Yes! But games take about a minute and a half to make, so you will have to be quick to hire new ones :P !

Also, I had Walt Sidney as a game designer, Shigeru Migamoto as a director and Lady GooGoo as a designer.

So awesome.

In industry news, Japanese company DeNA is buying Ngmoco for $400 million.

That looks very similar to Hollywood Mogul.

Can you make a game about being a game developer? HEAD ASPLODE!

I almost forgot to mention these extremely important news. Wired’s Rhett Allain calculates that the Angry Bird sling shot must be 5 meters tall, and the red bird accordingly 70 cm!

So with the up and down discussion of 100 Rogues, what is the most recommendable roguelike for iOS nowadays? I know it’s been discussed before, but with new stuff and updates (for better or worse) this question appears to be a moving target.

Just try something different, took me a while to figure the right order of actions in that one but in the end I found a pretty easy to execute set of moves.

Anyway, cut the rope’s problem is that it is finished much earlier than angry birds. Angry birds has tons of luck in it, and it takes me forever to get 3 stars. Cut the rope is much simpler, and I want those new level already.

I love “Cut the Rope” but my fat fingers can get in the way.
