Are the controls improved over Galaxy on Fire? Because I found it borderline unplayable.

Reiner Knizia’s Ra is out as a universal app for $5. It’s one of his best board game designs, and that’s saying a lot for a guy who’s designed more than 500 of them. Haven’t tried it yet but early impressions from others are positive. No retina support, unfortunately.

I’ll definitely check it out, Ingenious is like crack.

I like how the iPhone and iPad have basically become my “Play all the boardgames that my stupid real-life friends will never play with me” platform.

It’s so-so on the iPhone, but a stellar fit for the iPad. Lots of options for speed and notifications, too.

Fruit Ninja finally got updated with the new banana arcade mode! Haven’t tried it yet, though.

Finally Pandora Box actually pushes me a sale. Prince of Persia is now $.99. I thought $4.99 was a hell of a stretch for it, but $.99 is a pretty easy sale for me.

I’m a little disappointed this didn’t come with a full Gameloft sale, though. With Dungeon Hunter 2 coming out, I’d love to pick up Dungeon Hunter for the iPad or the Spider-Man game.

And hey, while I’m bitching, I wish someone would make a Diablo clone that didn’t use a goddam virtual joystick. That shit’s not necessary. Especially on the iPad. If you’re going to rip off Diablo, RIP OFF DIABLO. Tap to move. Tap to attack. Set up hotbuttons at the bottom of the screen for specials.

I picked up Game Dev Story after hearing about it on a couple different gaming podcasts, this may be the most addictive game I’ve ever played on an iPhone. Very highly recommended.

Dungeon Hunter has tap controls.

Does it? Is it something you have to activate? All I could ever get to work were the shitty virtual stick/virtual buttons setup. I’d like the game a hell of a lot more if I had real tap controls.

Of course this also entails a hot bar with special attacks WoW style at the bottom of the screen rather than only being able to have one special attack selected on the hotbutton at a time.

I’d have to install it again to check, but I’m pretty sure there was an option for tap controls in the settings.

I’ve still got this installed - yep, it has touch controls that you set in the options, works as you’d expect.

I was a big fan of Cut The Rope for the first chapter, when all the tools and concepts were fresh, but it’s really not a good puzzle game for me. The solution to every puzzle (and I’m in the last ten or so puzzles), with few exceptions, are quite obvious immediately, and it’s just a matter of quick fingers at that point. It’s got more in common with platform jumping games than puzzle games, if you ask me. I would not recommend it any more.

I can see the platforming analogy, but I don’t think it’s about quick reactions - it’s more about timing, and memorizing what do to when. The spider level 4-7 is a classic example of this - it’s a doddle once you know what to do, but until you figure out the best timing it can be frustrating. One thing’s for sure - every time I thought I needed fast reactions to complete a puzzle, I was always on the wrong track. The best solution turned out to be much more elegant and simple.

I certainly much prefer it to Angry Birds which I’m trying to work through at the moment. Talk about bloody random. Of course, it’s not really random at all as my 11 year old nephew aptly demonstrated the other day: he can complete any level that I’m totally stuck on by aiming those birds with almost pixel-perfect precision. I’m getting old, clearly.

Well that’s good news! I’ll persevere.

Hmmm, Heroes 2 was just released. I get the feeling it won’t last very long.

That’s the worst Jagged Alliance clone I’ve ever seen.

Well they don’t have a screenshot showing the hex fights (if they are in).
I tried to check on their website but it’s pretty “basic”:

I’m all for minimalistic but…

Oh and for $1.99 I would have bitten.

The last game didn’t work well on the cramped iPhone screen. I really wish these jokers would release their ripoffs on the iPad.
