Wait!? WHAT? SC2 Super Melee like? I am looking up now!

Super Blast 2 is out! It’s more super and has more blast! I mean, they enhanced the excellent but minimalistic first game, so now there are multiple high-resolution backgrounds, lots of new enemies that even shoot back, boss fights with boss & player health and such things. Best scrolling shooter ever!

I need a bit of help. I’d like to find my wife a new game for our iPad. By far, the thing she’s spent the most time playing is a tower defense game called The Creeps (www.supersquawksoftware.com). It’s a relatively non-complex tower defense game (only 6 or 7 tower types), but quite nice. I’d love to find another, good, tower defense game for her, but the problem is that there’s so many of them and they often get hopelessly complex. So I’m looking for suggestions for a tower defense game for iPad (preferably) or iPhone that has:

  • Reasonably “cute” graphics. Robots/aliens/gory zombies are probably not going to interest her.

  • Accessibility. Creeps is nice because it has three levels of difficulty, and the level difficulties ramp up at a very nice pace. My wife has systematically worked her way from easy to normal and is now up to hard I think.

  • Multiple levels. I’ve played a couple that only have one level, and they get boring very quickly. Similarly, neither she nor I really enjoy the “build your own path” variants of tower defense.

Additional fun gimmicks are welcome. (For instance, in The Creeps there are “special weapons” that all give you tilt based gimmicks that can globally or locally slow monsters, locally increase damage significantly, or even “rewind” monsters to the beginning of the level.)

Hopefully folks here have some ideas. I’d love to find her a new game to play (both because I think she’d enjoy it and because I can hear the glue bottles squirting in my sleep some nights).

Plants vs. Zombies?

Yeah, shoulda mentioned that we’ve exhausted that option multiple times on the PC already. (We have the iPad version, but I think after 35+ hours on the PC she’s kinda done with the game.)

Build-a-Lot and Build-a-Lot 2 aren’t tower defense games, but I think they fit all the other criteria and are good for at least 8-10 hours each. I kind of like Guns & Glory, but the theme is perhaps off (bandits robbing settlers) and while it’s nice that you can move your towers around, the gameplay is more repetitive and not as entertaining as The Creeps.

re: The Creeps, it’s a fantastic game that is really often overlooked (most people I know with iPhones start with Fieldrunners, ugh). I’m surprised that Super Squawk hasn’t put out any other games. I think The Creeps came out over two and a half years ago, and while I appreciate that they’ve added a tremendous amount of updates, I’d like to give them more money for a new game with that level of polish.

Roll Through the Ages is free now. Good game, shitty tutorial.

Lots of good stuff coming out. I’d rather play most of them on the iPad, though. Especially Aralon. Any chance of that one going universal?

Gameloft really stepped it up over the past few weeks. I hate the controls for most of their FPS actioners, though. So as much as their Drake ripoff looks good, I’ll wait for it to drop in price. A lot.

And I noticed that no one responded to this…

Wait for the HD version. Gameloft is shit about just giving us universal versions. If you absolutely need yourself some Dungeon Hunter, play the first one. I guess.

The only thing apt to really get me to pick up 2 would be if you could play the HD and non-HD versions together in multiplayer. mmalloy loves any game that lets her smash barrels. So if she could play on her iPad and I could play on my iPhone, I’d be down. Hell, I’d even be down with paying twice. Which I’d have to, due to the annoying non-universal versions thing again.

Aralon says iPad native resolution is supported, along with retinal display on the iPhone/touch 4.

Oh. Huh. Last I’d heard, they weren’t interested in doing a universal app.

Neato!

Aralon is out, and it’s universal. They are saying the launch price is 30% off, so expect it to go up to $10 at some point. It supports retina display, and requires a minimum of a 3GS or iTouch 3rd gen (which probably means 32 and 64 gig versions only, as the 3rd gen 8gb is actually just second gen hardware).

I’ve killed the God King in Infinity Blade, so I might jump into Aralon now. It looks pretty good. A 30 hour plus open world WRPG for my phone? I have to at least give that a shot.

Real Racing 2 is out as well, and looks nice. Career mode that takes 10 hours+, 30 cars that are said to handle distinctly. I quite like tilt-control racers on the platform, but I might wait for a price-drop.

Edit: Also, Riven is out. It’s a one gig install though, and you need 2 gigs free to install it.

What is an WRPG, btw?

Western RPG. As oppsed to JRPG. Usually I’d just say RPG, but there is perhaps the first Western RPG on the App Store, so I thought it worthwhile highlighting that this is not just another JRPG. It’s open world and quests have multiple solutions.

Western RPG. My knowing the meaning does not mean I condone its use.

Cool. Thanks for the clarification! I was thinking “wireless rpg?” “Wandering rpg”?

I’d say Undercroft and The Quest are both WRPGs.

This may be the wrong thread, but for some reason NFS Hot Pursuit HD (iPad) is 99 cents right now, down from $9.99. I don’t know if it’s any good, but that’s quite the discount.

I was thinking of The Quest when I equivocated on Aralon being the first. Aralon feels like a very different game to that, though. Perhaps I should have said something like: ‘there is nothing else like Aralon on the App Store’.

Same with SimCity last I checked. (iPad version).

EDIT: looking closer, a ton of EA games just dropped to that price point, for both iPhone and iPad. There are more than 70 going for 90% off.

So any impressions of Aralon yet?

Can you have multiple character slots? I’m thinking of getting it for the iPad so ‘horse killer’ mmalloy can play it, since she loves herself some Oblivion.

Oh, I didn’t see if anyone had mentioned this, but Cut the Rope has had a free ‘Christmas gift’ for a bit now. It’s free and it’s way the fuck and gone better than the bullshit Cosmic Box, so go grab it. I got all 75 stars in about an hour, but hey, it was free and fun.

I don’t really get why Super Mega Worm vs Santa is $.99. Cut the Rope’s Christmas Gift being free made for an awesome advertisement for CtR.

That damned horse deserved it!

Always getting in the way when I’m trying to kill shit.
