I’d say yeah that’s wrong. You aren’t getting any bonus XP when you do that, so though you are going to have swords to deal with monsters when they show up you are also not leveling as fast as you could. Remember monsters level based on number of turns, so you will end up underleveled if you do that. I used to play that way too until I read about the monster leveling.
I’m not sure you get bonus XP for number of swords used. From what I can tell, you’ll want to kill more than 3 skulls at a time for the bonus. I do agree with the big matches as the way to get ahead.
For real practice at that, play the Raider/Halfling class!
The thing about armor is that although it initially helps with preventing damage, it doesn’t scale as well as HP and the less shields are required to fill your armor, the more that can go to upgrades.

I was wondering if I needed to be doing more armor upgrades, but there is always something I prefer unless I am getting a 2 DEF bump and all the other upgrades are meh.
Keep in mind things like spikes and blunting wont activate if your armor is zero.
I don’t have an iDevice, but I was considering an iPod Touch in the future. Is there a difference between apps/games that a touch, an ipad and an iphone can run? I know that a touch does not have a microphone etc., so some apps will not work due to that, but are there other limitations?

Playing another game to try this out, this is what I found to be the case. Extra swords does not result in extra XP, but extra skulls do. So what I did this time around was to wait until there were several skulls on the board to match them all at once (rather than match a single skull to get rid of it right away). This worked quite well, as any damage I took due to leaving skulls on the board was mostly able to be healed fairly quickly, and I managed to get all the way to level 11 before dying to a stupid mistake (that being not realizing my health was low when one of my cooldowns probably would have saved me).

I have an iPod Touch, and for the most part any games made for the iPhone will work on the Touch. The only issues I have had are that some games require the most recent iOS version, which is not free to Touch owners. I think the last time I updated my iOS, I had to pay like $5 to $7 for it - I forget the exact amount off the top of my head, and while it doesn’t break the bank, it’s annoying to have to pay it at all, especially since they’re actually stopping me from spending more money in the App store by not giving me the OS update for free.
Anyway, I am not currently on the most recent iOS version, and there are several games I’d like to play that I can’t because I haven’t updated yet.
From what I’ve read over on SomethingAwful, that’s okay because neither of those is worthwhile in the long run.
This is no longer true. I was all ready to call bullshit, since I’ve upgraded my OS on my Touch a couple of times and never had to pay a cent, but a quick Google revealed that Apple did indeed charge for OS upgrades in the past, but no longer do.
Are you sure you can’t upgrade for free? I thought apple did away with that. My wife has a 2nd gen Ipod touch (well now that she has a phone it’s the kids) and I’ve updated it to 3.0+ (4.0?) for free. I think what you are saying was true before 3.0 came out (for all ipod touch’s and phones) but since 4.0 they are “giving” the upgrades away. Try to connect to itunes and see if it lets you upgrade.
They’re not?
My best character thus far is a level 18 Priest on Harder, and he was based mainly around regen and blunting. Spikes aren’t really worth it, IMHO, but the other two are.

Hm, I didn’t realize that. My OS is on 3.1.3 at the moment, which I paid to upgrade to, and admit I haven’t even checked on upgrades since then, since I just assumed I’d be charged for it.
I’ll check it out. Thanks for the heads up!
Priests get a regen bonus or something, right? That would help, but still, in the later game I could be taking 120+ damage a round. Regen can’t cope with that. Neither can blunting.
And I just got a mage to level 60-something, turn 666, score 18595 without ever having either. I pretty much just spammed health, luck and weapon damage. Whenever a boss came up, I Dazzled and/or used Magic Sword and generally was able to kill every single enemy on the board including the boss, which invariably led to a levelup and sometimes a gold upgrade.
Just played as a priest and got to level 77. I had regen up to something like +60 a turn, so I woudn’t under sell it. I expect you can do a similar thing with spikes/blunting if you focus on them in upgrades, though it might be a bit harder to do without the Faun style racial bonus.

Yeah, I just took a raider up to level ~58 with the double-regeneration perk added, and even at higher levels regenerating 30-40 points per turn is nice.
Spikes aren’t as much of a lifesaver, but having 5 points there is handy for whittling away the occasional skull off in a corner that you just can’t easily get to without wasting a buff with a recharge period.
Can confirm that Apple no longer charge iPod owners for iOS upgrades.
I made the adjustment to ignoring shields and just swiping big groups of potions and not conserving any. Makes room for everything else. Try to only swipe groups of 4 or more and no less than 3 skulls unless there is just nothing else. I already made a personal Top 10 score with perhaps 50-75 turns less than similar scores. I move along at such a good clip now and the Skulls are not scaling up nearly as fast, which has resulted in me dying when I have multiple skills that could save me. Creeps up on me more now.
The key now is just ignoring everyone else’s scores because you all suck.
Why would you ignore shields when they get you upgrades?
Well, that’s not exactly right. I mean not conserving them like I used to, by killing one or two skulls so I can keep my armor at max.
