Neuroshima Hex is great. I have the board game as well as the iPad versions. I actually recommend you get the Puzzle version when trying to learn how all the tiles interact.
Also, there most certainly IS long term planning but it’s not about board position. Getting good at the game is hugely dependent on your tile management. Each turn you draw up to your 3 tiles and discard 1. Your decision to use/discard those tiles or save them for future use will determine how quickly new stuff will come up on future turns since you can be drawing between 1-3 new tiles per turn. Maybe you want to save an awesome tile for later, but you’ll be at a disadvantage to draw something else you may need, etc. Getting to know what tiles your army has helps a lot. (The real game comes with cool reference cards showing each of your possible tiles complete with quantities).
In any case, great game. I just wish the iOS one had asynchronous play.

Ooooh… bummer. That’s not going to work for us, then. Any suggestions for something that a usually-non-gaming Carcassone player might get into?

Digging back into the thread a bit, but I wanted to say that my two-year-old loves the hell out of MPL, so thanks for putting it together.

Anyone have a recommendation for asynchronous Chess on the iPhone? I’ve got a couple of friends across the world that I’d love to play with and PBEM style games (Carcassonne, Uniwar) are absolutely perfect for us.

Isn’t there Chess With Friends that has a free version?

Yeah, Chess with Friends has a free version. Simple but it works.
Super Stickman Golf is free today. Free I say! Everyone should have this game, even if you don’t like golf. Plus it’s got great multiplayer and it’s free!
I’m up for Words with Friends and/or Chess with Friends
Not only do I not like golf, I don’t like stickmen or multiplayer.
Or Christmas. Or puppies.
Actually, I don’t like golf either, but oddly, I like some video games based on golf. Like Hot Shots Golf–awesome game.
I suck at both, but feel free to send me an invite (Brakara). Haven’t played either in awhile now…
I haven’t played chess in about 10 years and played my first game of scrabble in 25 years just today. :)

Just started playing this (on the ipad) and its rather fabulous. Somehow it feels more like a puzzle game than anything else so if anyone is put off by the golf aspect give it a try anyway. Is good.
Check out Reiner Knizia’s Samurai, one of the many adaptations of his board games. I’m about to start playing that asynchronously with my brother, having moved on from Carcassonne and Disc Drivin. You place tiles on a map to capture territory, if I remember my brief interaction with it a few months back on a long flight.
Incidentally, NSH Puzzle is currently a buck (a steal if there ever was one) and the main game is $2.99.
You know, I remember trying this on iPhone and I didn’t care for it, but it’s fun on the larger iPad screen.
:O
That is all.
Really, though, 25 years?
yep, might even be my first COMPLETE game ever!
The next time I’m about to buy anything with sliding tile puzzles in it, someone slap me. I hate those, always have. Bought The Heist, deleted The Heist.
(not blaming you for recommending it or the game for having them, just mad at myself for buying it when I know I hate that sort of thing)
The puzzles get tough, too. There’s one I can’t get.
