Those are also ports where most of the production work had been completed years ago.
CivRev was more at launch I believe? Good point in any case. That said, Pirates is a really disappointing port, so I’m going to rudely ignore it’s hello and pretend I didn’t see it.
Anyway, I should clarify that the higher price points are I think needed the more “niche” the title is. The lower the price point, the more demographics it needs to appeal to. I’d love to see a well polished original turned based tactical game on iOS, but I don’t see that working without a higher price point.

There is Tactical Soldier. Does it fit the bill? I would have thought someone here would have tried it here, but no one has or I missed it. It is currently $4.99. With no discussion here, I am hesitant to take the plunge, but…
Toucharcadedug it. + for zombie slaughter included.
I played Tactical Soldier, it’s a decent game, but a little half baked. Not buggy or anything, just uninspiring level layouts and a not super well balanced system. It’s definitely worth buying for $5 if you like tactical combat games though.
I appreciate TouchArcade for giving the heads up on games, but they are so overwhelmingly positive about everything it’s hard to tell what is actually good.
I also played TacSol and liked it.
I would have wanted more depth, but it was well worth the $5.
Tyjenks, you and I seem to have almost congruent tastes in games so I think you’ll like it too.

Someone compared in to Metal Gear Solid Acid and while I know that was popular and I did like it somewhat, it was too puzzley as I remember. I have lost all tolerance for any tactical/strategy game that is reduced to trying things until you hit on the right one.
Glowfish is awesome, and gorgeous
It’s sad so few people know about it
I may pick up FFT when it releases for the iPad, supposedly later this month. Then again, maybe I won’t–it’ll be the third version (DS, PSP as well) of a form of FFT that I have.

Wait. $16 and it’s not even universal?
Fuck that.

If it’s a good port I am OK with the price.
Oh. Yes, fuck that. That’s a giant pet peeve of mine.

I don’t mind $16 for a great game (and there are few better than FFT), but it has to be universal.
I’m new to iOS games and only have an iPad2, not an iPhone. Are there usually significant differences between games optimized/with specific versions for the iPad, and universal aps?
The concern with FFT is that it is isn’t “universal”. While you could, in fact, play it on an iPad, it would only be by playing at their original size or at 2x iPhone resolution, which might be fine for a game you paid a buck for, but not for something you spent 15 dollars on. I think the other concern here might also be that the presumed HD version will be even more expensive.
Some iPhone games look pretty decent at 2x, but they’re never going to look great.

Well the word from SE is that this new iPhone version has redone high res graphics so I am guessing that’s how they are going to justify the price.
Cut the Rope Experiments is out for 99 cents.
Just picked it up and sadly have no time to play here at work now.
Anyways that is the price point Square: $0.99
Bet this game will sell shitloads.

Awesome! I’ve set up a threadover in books/music to post your creations and share tricks.
This is what I’m talking about. Cut the Rope is a game design with the broadest possible appeal – it works for dudes and ladies, moms, kids, suits, everybody. It’s also a game that can be created by a small team on a relatively small budget. If every iOS consumer insists on a 99 cent price point, that is the only kind of game you’re going to get.
There is no scenario where an involved fantasy tactical combat game gets even close to the sales figures of an angry birds or a cut the rope. Not even close.
Yep; niche games have to charge more IMO, and there’s nothing wrong with that
$9.99 for a universal big budget app is perfectly reasonable. I’d buy a universal FFT at that price without batting an eye. $16 for a non-universal iPhone game is way out of line with the the market pricing.
