I’ve been playing a bit of Zombie Gunner. It is an enjoyable little game, but I’ve been frustrated thinking about two great moments in the game that are underutilized.

One is the moment between launching a howitzer shot at a blob of zeds, only to notice the telltale glow of a hapless civilian in the middle of said blob. Triumphant righteous slaughter turns into friendly fire in an instant, and that transformation of satisfaction into regret is fantastic.

The other is when you can see a civilian in a life or death (or life vs. death) struggle with a zombie. There’s no sound, you are zoomed in from a distant plane, and here the most fundamental moment of that person’s life plays out before you in silence. Sniping the zombie is incredibly satisfying, and outside of a “zombie sniped” message, the game does nothing with it.

Seconded for tChess. It’s incredibly easy to get multiplayer working in Game Center, too.

Spoiler

Max out smithy first under castle upgrades!
I go with armored guard, horsemen, Arthur, Henry, wiseman.
Arrow volley, death coaster.
At the start build 1 armored guard, then upgrade the smithy. Use arrows and car as soon as they are available. Build Arthur, wiseman, then Henry in that order. After that just crank out armored guards and horsemen in roughly equal amounts. If any heroes die quickly build a replacement. At around 8 million or so points you’ll have a big enough army where the enemy king dies after a single swing. After that you can just park ash at the far right. The wiseman will keep you healed up. At this point the game plays forever by itself with no interaction from the player required. FYI, I have everything listed above maxed out including ash with the chainsaw.

That’s a lot of upgrading! A shame the game awards so little coins per minute in infinite mode.

You’re supposed to buy coins with real money, after all…

So I guess nobody knows how to make Game Center shows nick names? :(

Also, Conan: Tower of the Elephant got a good review on Touch Arcade but they always like everything. Anyone played it?

edit: Slide to Play says it still needs a lot of polish. Too bad.

There’s a whole thread about it

Thanks, gam.

…brinous!

Yeah the grinding started to get bad around wave 45 for me and then continued quite a bit in endless mode but I was still having fun. Now that I can survive forever in endless mode and upgraded every single thing in the game I guess I can truly say I BEAT the game. Still, very impressive for a free game (no, I didn’t buy any coins).

And now I’m hooked on zombie gunship though I’m not quite as motivated to upgrade everything. FYI, if you upgrade the zombie bounty thing to max (that last upgrade level is 100K!!!) you get 30 per zombie. Not sure if that was worth it.

Army of Darkness is Free! Did I miss that announcement previously?

If you like adventure games, especially games like Phoenix Wright or Hotel Dusk, then you really need to try out The Secret of Chateau Moreau. It’s by far the best iphone exclusive adventure game I’ve played, and reminds me a lot of Hotel Dusk.

Here’s part of the Touch Arcade summary/ review

You play as Antoine, the step-son of the wealthy Count Moreau, who has died under suspicious circumstances and now you’re the main suspect. Antoine must investigate the crime, solving puzzles along the way, to prove his own innocence. The story is captivating, almost like reading a book, except you’re an active participant in the drama.

This is a “who dun it?” murder mystery, with back-story and a decent cast of suspects. I’ve met 14 characters so far, including family members, a maid, a nanny, an engineer, a house guest…and yes, there’s a butler. Maybe he did it? Maybe he didn’t? Perhaps I did it? That’s what makes this game so much fun.

There’s three different types of gameplay. Sometimes you walk your character around a floor-map of the Chateau, searching rooms for objects, using objects or presenting them to people. During your investigations you’ll uncover topics of interest, which are recorded as clues. Once a clue is revealed, you can question the various characters about it and use objects to resolve that clue.

The second type of play is when you present your evidence, at the appropriate times, to solve the mystery. It’s this part of the game which is most like Phoenix Wright. If you don’t respond to the situation correctly, you might fail to prove your innocence. You’re given five candles (lives), which extinguish each time you make a mistake. There’s 40 alternate endings, which are presented in this game like achievements. So, in addition to completing the story, you can also try to reveal the other 39 endings.

The third type of gameplay involves puzzles to solve, such as opening an object, entering a code, or putting things in the right position. The developers advise there are over 100 puzzles, so I’ll take their word on that.

Aralon: Sword and Shadow HD is only $.99! Thanks for the 100th time Appshopper.

There is a ton of good stuff on sale right now.

EDIT: In case you’re wondering (all of these are $1 unless otherwise indicated): Ravensword, Rimelands, Street Fighter IV, Monster Hunter, Bejeweled 2 (free), Inotia 3, GeoDefense Swarm (free), Zookeeper DX, ChuChu Rocket, Modern Combat 2, Sketch Ball (free), Lomo Camera Pro (free), Hector: Badge of Carnage, EDGE: Extended (this is awesome), Worms 2, Enviro-Bear 2010, Space Station: Frontier (free)

Most iPad versions are also on sale…

Where do you look to check out what’s on sale?

Firemint’s new release, Spy Mouse, is pretty fun. A return to their line drawing roots as you guide a spy mouse to the cheese. At $.99 it’s a bargain, though it’s hard to justify the 200 mb file size. They also put way more presentation into their interstitial sequences than they should. It takes forever to get from one level to the next because of their insistance on overproduced wipes and a Super Mario Bros 3 overworld.

There’s an app for that. Warning: do NOT allow it to turn on notifications. It will wake you up at 3 AM to tell you that a wishlisted app just got some minor update.

Finished Secret of Chateau de Moreau. What a great game. I was captivated all the way through. If you like adventure games this is a no brainer.

Well when I say finished I mean one of the endings. Looks like there are several, and you need to find each of them to really flesh out the full story.

So try it out. There’s a free lite version which I linked to earlier.

Also, movie rights have been optioned for the game. Which I think is a first for an iPhone game.

I can’t find Chateau Moreau… Is it region-locked? I’m in Sweden.
