Yeah, that’s a fair counterpoint, I was only addressing one dimension of that openess, and it’s true. Easy example, Apple has repeatedly pissed me off pulling things from the app market that go against their schizo TOS. No such trouble with this on android.

re: the searching stuff. To be fair, I was reacting partly to history - the android market has improved. I used to search and get nonsense, apps with titles and descriptions in other languages, apps which I couldn’t see the relationship between my search term and its presence in the results, and so on. The latter is still somewhat true, and maybe at root this is a personal preference issue. I search on ios, and occasionally get frustrated because I can’t find the thing I am looking for. I search on android and I find too many things which I then have to sort through, not all of which I can see the relevancy for. I guess I prefer the former to the latter. (this is all on the phones btw).

One thing I can’t resist taking a potshot at which I should have done in my first post: itunes is crap. The only other app I have to use on a regular basis which I despise more is Adobe’s reader/pdf tools. ios 5 has helped tremendously by reducing reliance on it, but it astounds me how Apple has such a glaring blind spot to such a piece of crap. For years. Like maybe 10 years at this point. It’s remarkable.

Except for activation, you don’t need to use iTunes with iOS 5. I still use it to backup everything though (which is nice and a feature you don’t have with Android IIRC).

Well, I have been talked out of Andriod. =) What iphone and ipad should I zero in on? I assume 4S but what memory size? The ipad will not have a data package as I plan to just wifi it, but ver 1 or 2, and what memory size?

I will probably use the camera a lot so I was thinking medium on the memory. The ipad… I don’t know, are games big nowadays? Would getting the small one be like a 8 gig Xbox360 and trying to crame DLC and digital downloads on it?

I’d go with a 32 GB iPhone 4s. You need some room but you never lose purchases. You can always reload things.

I’d probably recommend the same size for the iPad 2, although I’d wait for the iPad 3 this Spring. I have a 16 GB iPad and I constantly have to manage how much junk I have on it.

yup … I’d wait for the iPad 3 as well since its supposedly due in 2-3 months (either that, or if you’re on a budget, would be a great time to pick up an iPad 2 then upon the iPad3 announcement lol)

I do have several games that run over 1 gig, so yes they do get fairly large. It really depends on the type of game. I would expect sizes will be getting larger once ipad3 comes out since the resolution will be increased.

Oh, ipad3? Hrm, I was all set to go, but now I guess I will wait a bit. Thanks for the heads up.

Games, magazines, comic books and movies fill up an iPad 32GB fast, at least for me. So I’ll get a 64GB iPad 3 for sure.

Yes, it is widely believed they are in production now for a release in March.

So getting a 32gig 4S is still a good call now? How do you think say… Hero Academy or Ascension would play on a phone?

Ascension plays great, especially if you know the cards. Better on an iPad, but if you’re a junkie it’s a great way to get your fix.

Either play incredibly well. Just look here and here, here, and here :)

Ascension’s interface, is particularly good, minus a niggle here and there. Even with the iphones relatively small screen, the art is distinctive to recognize on sight after a few games, and any card can be enlarged with a double tap.

Agreed. It would be tougher to learn Ascension on the smaller screen, because of the need to view the cards, but it plays quite well.

So my nephew has a game in the App Store. It’s called Mazing. The idea is to get through a maze and collect jewels. It has a really nice 3D look. If you’re interested in that kind of game, give it a shot. (And honestly, even if you’re not)

He told me that he and his partner are working on a graphics fix for the iPad. Let me know what you think of it, if you do pick it up.

Been playing a bit of Henry and the Psionic Overlords today. 4.99 for the full app but it seems interesting so far.

For some reason it is free right now. Downloading.

The game is free, but there is a limitation on the number of turns you can play at one time I think. There’s an IAP purchase for the full game.

Traveller AR is in open beta for .99.

Traveller?? Wha??

A Traveller iOS MMO is sort of like the beautiful girl from high school you had a crush on gaining 50 pounds and catching herpes.
