The major problem with Wesnoth isn’t the performance, but the clunky controls.

I only tried the lite but it’s another lazy Square port, pinch and zoom only reveals how fucking horrible the character models are pixelated.

It says version 1.2, faster framerate, smoother map scrolling and many bug fixes and improvements.
That’s weird. It’s only for the free version of Battle of Wesnoth, which I presume is a demo. I wonder what the deal is for those of us who paid $5 for this absolutely wretched iPhone port? I’ve dropped a fair bit of change on games for the system in the last month, but the only time like I felt I got truly ripped off was buying that piece of utter half-baked junk.

Decided to take 10 seconds and find this, shame on you Respected Internet Blogger!
Culled from various posts
Long story short, he submitted the update and the demo at the same time and the update was rejected because it displayed a memory warning. It was then approved after the demo version was published on the app store. So if anyone is to blame it’s Apple.
I have a love / hate relationship with Wesnoth, so I probably wouldn’t buy it even if it didn’t have a reputation for being slow and clunky on the iPhone. The “to hit” nature of defense makes a few bad die rolls too important, and it’s remarkably easy to screw yourself without knowing you’ve done so until a later scenario. Particularly in the “Legend of Wesmere” campaign, where you discover around scenario 21 that you should have built up a force of flying level 4 units, even though flight wasn’t critical in any earlier scenario.
Pity, that. You don’t see many wargames these days with features like hex maps and zones of control.
Hey, you guys tracking GeoSpark scores should friend my buddy Psycdude.

I has free Uniwar! Is there a list of people’s Uniwargamertags anywhere? Mine is Orf BC.
Yeah. Technically the game is excellent, and it’s a shame the setting/story/plagiarism gives me absolutely no motivation to play it. As a proof of concept for what could happen if the world went mad and Microsoft made Halo for the iPhone (or Zune HD I guess), it’s pretty awesome.

Story of Gameloft’s life.
Yeah, wow. That looks like the last kind of game I’d ever want to play with touch-screen buttons.
I want my old leaderboard back.
[edit]I take it back, there’s nothing like a little inspiration.
I tried the Free 50 Levels version and the controls have potential to be good as they are split so right/left are on the left-hand side and up/down are on the right-hand side. I didn’t play long enough for my brain to get used to it, but with practice it would likely work better than a virtual D-pad. I may never know, because the Pac-Man gameplay in the first fifteen or so levels I tried wasn’t exactly inspiring.

Defender Chronicles is back down to $.99 Finally picked it up last night after enjoying the demo a ton, and all of everyone’s recommendations.
Touch Arcade has rounded up some free versions of good games. I didn’t know that The Settlers and Rogue Planet now have trial versions.

Save your money and avoid ridge racer. Graphics look ps one, framerate is a bit choppy even on the 3gs, there is almost no sense of speed, bulk of the content is dlc, and worst of all are the controls. Tilt steering is the only method and it is horribly broken. It feels completly sluggish and unresponsive (even after cranking up the sensitivity). Starting and maintaining a proper power slide is almost impossible. I would much prefer they just implement the slider bar steering like in pole position.

You’d be foolish to buy any Namco game since in-game charging for content was enabled, just like on the 360 they love to sell you a game and then sell you the rest of the game.
