So I’m in a bit of a Heroes of Might & Magic phase at the moment and own 2, 3 and 5 (plus expansions for all of them). Tried a few scenarios, but I always enjoy a longer term goal and thought I’d give the HOMM 3 first campaign a try, the For the Queen one.
Problem is, the first map is really boring the socks off me. It’s easy, but it’s also big with an underground. I won this ages ago, but I keep having to ferry troops around, I keep having to push a little further to find the next easy to win battle. Does it get better? Is there another campaign I should be trying?
Sorry, they’re all like that. I’d say 3 or 4 had the best campaign, 4 was not a great game but the campaign didn’t drag out over as long as the rest IMO.
6 is even more annoying, now they’ve added unskippable cutscenes to every minor interaction rather than an easily dismissable wall o’ text.
The whole point of a campaign is to wrap a sequence of scenarios in a continuous story, so complaining about unskippable cutscenes is kind of missing the point…
Campaign scenarios in 6 are also very long but the troop ferrying part is greatly simplified so there’s much less busywork. The story integration is very nicely done, with multiple campaigns representing the viewpoints of various characters and tons of incident dialog. Again, assuming you actually like stories in your game… otherwise I’m not sure why you’d ever play any strategy game campaigns in the first place.
HOMM 3’s expansions did have decent campaigns, and the Heroes Chronicles that were released post-HOMM 3 also had a good campaign each (there were 8 of them). You can buy Heroes Chronicles Complete off GOG for $10, but it sometimes goes on sale with the HOMM3 Complete package for less.
I thought Heroes IV had the best campaigns, they were well written and got you into the characters. Really because of the AI in IV the campaigns were all you could enjoy playing(either OC or player made ones)but worth it for those.
