Links between facilities will cost you Power. Or is it CPU? I can’t remember.
Ok links cost CPU and powergrid: here is the total of my planet

I am getting 4 resources with 3 extractors each: BUT- I am not going to post any numbers now because half of my deposits will dry up in one day, and I was shooting for more of a “touch it every 5 days” kind of setup.
EDIT: ah turns out I had everything set to extract but not go on a route for about an hour :( ah well.
so I just want to mess around with the new planet portion of the game, can I do that on the 1.99 steam deal going on ? or will I need like 4-5 months of research skills to begin doing anything useful on the planets?
Thats… interesting. I’ve seen several topics in the forums and actually asked when I setup my buddy account and the answers I received were in the negative.
But the unwashed mobs being what they are, I’ll take someone’s word that seems to know what they’re talking about.
A couple hours of skill training time, day max with a few other skills and you can dabble. Money might be more of an issue right off the bat, in fact it will. I blew a mill or two just jiggerin with my setup, and while thats peanuts for most of us right out the gate thats a bit. Though if you mission while you train your skills you might be able to get enough cash to play with. How much isk do lvl 1 missions generate these days? Expect to spend 300,000 thousand at a minimum.

You will need Science at V which is about 8 days of training in total to be able to train up the specific PI skills (which would add about another 3-5 days for mid level competence).
If you’re creating a new character for this, load up on Int and Memory to get the fastest training possible.
ah cool , well I might mess around with it for 1.99 for my first month :) just to see if I want to re-sub my main account. I haven’t played since Jan 2010.
my main character has about 70 mill isk , can I send 2-3 mill isk over to another char on a new account ?
You can add the month to your main account. There is an option for “CD Key”. I did that to my 2006 trial account.
Uh what? you dont need Science V for the basic skills, maybe for one of the advanced but certainly not for the basics.
Looking at evemon, the highest requisite skill is for planetology, and that requires science 4 which is about 18 hours. You don’t need planetology to start.
All you need to lightly dabble is remote sensing and command center upgrades, for a total cost of 750,000 isk. They have no pre-reqs. To get lvl 1 on both skills takes 27 minutes total.
question , regarding the STEAM eve sale, if I buy it today, does it start immediately? or can I wait 2-3 weeks and then log on to start my trial?
I have so many games being played right now there is just no time to donate to a new eve character this week.
i THINK it starts when you log in for the first time.
Actually that would be best, buy it now and get someone to loan you isk. Queue up the learning skills each day, takes less than a minute. That way you have that out of the way for when you start. Alternatively you could queue up other skills, but that would require a bit of research into what you want to do and it doesn’t sound like you have the time for that.

Just pick the long and slow extraction (96 hours I think?). It’s more hands off. You can speed it up at any renewal time though.
From what I could tell on my second planet, space between extraction points doesn’t seem to affect other extractors. It should, but it did not. So the long links from your extractors to your processing could be cut way back unless they just happen to be sitting on a very high resource point.

According to Evemon, Remote Sensing requires Science III. Command Centre Upgrades has no skill pre-reqs but can’t be trained on a trial account which means you’d need to convert the account first.
You’re right! I somehow missed that all of my throwaway characters somehow has science 3.
So on slow extraction, my 2 planets will make around 2.7 million a week if I just sell the materials on the market.
Overnight, over around a 16 hour period, I collected:
Industrial Fibers 100
Proteins 120
Biofuels 260
Bacteria 340
Electrolytes 80
Water 120
Plasmoids 140
Oxygen 140
Roughly comes out to 250K isk if sold right now. That is ok, for having only 2 days of skills and considering I need to check it every 4 days. And you don’t actually have to warp over there- I managed to pick planets in my home base, so I can check and modify them whenever I want.
My only problem is: I read that when you destroy your command center, you automatically lose all building linked to it: so there is no way I can just grab the 24 hour skill to get the next level of command center and get more extractors out?

Um…some comments on PI building.
You can route material THROUGH extractors to the final destination, up to six links total.
So instead of a spider web, you can do this:
E—E---E—E---E------------L
or this, etc (whatever is most efficient powergrid wise; lay down all routes, then cancel, and add the powergrid usage per link up):
E
E-E—E------------------L
|
|
E—E
Extractors should be chained or spidered to one launchpad, NOT a factory. Extra materials aren’t stored at the factory, but are at the launchpad/storage.
Here’s my basic setup with the 15k powergrids, works on huge gas worlds (I can get 2 more buildings on smaller worlds). Everything gets routed into and then back out of the launchpad. With better resource concentrations you can add more factories or another launchpad instead of extractors, but mine are set to be 1 minute of work/day right now:
…Bf
…
E(5)-------L-Bf
…/
…Af E(5-6)
Launchpads are overall just better than storage, currently.
So you want all extractors to share one route to the central launchpad, then route out to factories placed RIGHT NEXT to the launchpad.
This saves a ton of powergrid if your routes can handle the capacity; I believe that upgrading one long link is cheaper on the powergrid than laying down two long links generally, as it has been in all cases I’ve tested.
That advice is so brilliant that I am going to research level 4 command centers, a 5 day skill. Alas it only gives me 2,000 more powergrid, but thats 2 extractors, and with your system i can add at least 2 more: giving me 25% more money essentially.
Stop talking your silly moon language.
Can we go back to blowing things up in pretty explosions?
You just blew my mind. Now I have to go redo all my planets. Thanks for the tips.
