Giovanni Ribisi in post-apocalypse clothes? Is it The Postman?

-Tom

Ding, ding, ding! Yes, it is The Postman. A movie I hadn’t seen in more than 20 years. I actually first saw in the theater. One other person was at the screening. A bomb by textbook definition, and the end of Kevin Costner’s heady run.

I had actually read the David Brin novel years and years before, so I was a fan of the source material. Rewatching this movie today is… well, weird thanks to the politics of the evil faction.

Brace yourself, there are A LOT of screens.

40:40 is terrible. Costner has no idea how important 20:20 frames are for our game.

60:60 is another terrible frame. We only see the back of Olivia Williams’ head. Did you know that this was her first big movie? She had only starred in TV movies and small productions in England. This bomb was her first Hollywood movie. Thankfully, her next movie would come out the following year, a little movie called Rushmore.

80:80 Those uniforms really look dorky.

100:100 Our first proper 2020 frame. Look into Costner’s eyes.

120:120 More Olivia, but at least we get her face this time

140:140 Yet another terrible 2020 frame. This guy has a directing Oscar over Scorsese?

160:160 Costner trying to recreate that Dances with Wolves magic. Alas, it’s no Dances with Wolves.

That’s about all I remember from the movie at all. I had hoped for better and was left with a long mess.

You dont remember Tom Petty? ‘Didn’t you use to be someone?’

The movie was set in 2013, so Petty would have still been alive in that timeline.

But a lot of people scoffed at the premise of this movie. If only they knew…

1998: Hahahahaha, what a farce, the US Postal Service saves civilization.

2020: THANK GOD FOR THE US MAIL.

That was a fun one, Woolen! Nicely done. Okay, let me go find some frames.

In what movie will you see this at the 20:20?

-Tom

Stealth?

Oh, man, that takes me back. Now I kind of wish it was Stealth. But it is not Stealth.

-Tom

Firefox?

(Aspect ratio seems wrong, but…)

The new Top Gun movie ?

Looks to modern if I am being honest but Firefox.

It is not Firefox or any variant of Top Gun.

-Tom

In what movie will you see this at the 40:40 mark?

-Tom

The first image has a plastic-looking cockpit, like some cheap movie from the 80’s or early 90’s. The second one still looks trashy but is clearly modern. So something deliberately trying for a campy throwback vibe? I’d think this was a Robert Rodriguez movie but I don’t see Danny Trejo anywhere.

The Bad Batch, maybe? Never got around to it but I thought Girl Walks Home was all right.

Nah, the color palate is wrong for it to be The Bad Batch.

I feel like I know the dude on the left, to a frustrating degree.

Whoever designed that cockpit deserves to be flogged. How the hell is your arm supposed to use that stick?

In what movie will you see this at the 60:60 mark?

-Tom

“Still life with a Glass, Oranges, and a Shotgun”
