Right now it’s -24 (-31 with windchill–that’s celsius)… this morning, it was -41 at the airport (which works out to -41.8 in Fahrenheit). It’s cold.
But it’s a dry cold, right?
At those temperatures it’s always a dry cold. Not that it makes it that much better, all things considered.
Anyway, did they shut down schools? Been a few years since they did that in E-town.
I know. :) Those temps. just boggle my mind. Phoenix’s “dry heat” of 115 degrees is still hot, too.
Well, that’s cold. I haven’t looked on the worst days of this winter but it can’t have been worse than -20. The days when I did look were -10 or so. Measured without that newfangled “windchill”, that is.
I shall not rest until I live in a country where windchill is not only an unknown concept, it is one that, barring outside influence, no physicist, meteorologist or physician would be capable of dreaming up.
Nah, schools are still open. JUst not many people on the street. We had some pipes burst here at work, so the boilers had to be turned off. The whole office was pretty damn cold.
Joy. No day off, huh?
-24 dry cold? That’s not cold!
And to think here in the Southeastern U.S. state of Alabama, if one ice patch is found on a suburban side street, schools close. Last year, many schools closed prematurely and cancelled school for the next day when forecasters had predicted 2 or 3 inches of snow on its way. By evening, it was looking iffy. The next day it was 35 and dry, but no school for the kiddies and not a loaf of bread or gallon of milk to be found in any surrounding stores.
What are boilers used for ? I don’t think we have such a thing in Australia.
We have had some very hot weather here lately. I measured 46.5C a couple of days ago - which is about 115 degrees Fahrenheit.
Also our national capital - Canberra - suffered a disastrous bushfire. Over 500 homes were lost and Australia’s oldest astronomical observatory was destroyed.
Tom, you live practically on the Arctic ice cap. What did you expect… ;)
It’s cold here in Rochester, too but not that cold (around 0 or so). We are getting butt-loads of lake effect snow, a conspiracy by those bastards in Toronto, no doubt. I’m talking to you, Desslock!
Fortunately our cold snap broke here in Orlando over the weekend. We don’t have to put on a wind breaker to go golfing now. Goodbye old man winter, and take your 44 degrees with you!!!
Ugh Ben - Lake effect snow :x I own a home in Litchfield CT - elevated just enough that we have been going to -1/-5 degrees every night for the last week. I thought that was cold but jesus!!! -24 is just plain numbing to the soul
That’s Lake Erie, it isn’t always frozen.

Hey, it was cold here in Austin, too – down in the 40s. :D
It was 69F in L.A. today. I had to bring a jacket so I wouldn’t get chilly when I walked a few blocks at lunchtime. I realized recently that I do not own gloves, a warm hat, an overcoat, or galoshes. It will be 53F tonight - better close the window soon.
Jakub, when can we expect you?
I think I forgot to mention a breathable atmosphere among my prerequisites :D
LA? Umm… E3. Duh. Jeez. Maybe some shmoozing thing will come up sooner (Generals launch? Westwood seems to like me), but otherwise, E3.
Cold in St. Louis. About 11 degrees and the wind chill drops it below zero.
We had down to some -23 Celsius the weeks around Christmas and New Years’. Moist cold. Now it’s slightly above freezing all the time. All the snow is gone :(
