Good eye, Jason! It’s Hitchcock’s I Confess, which was spent more time in pre-production than any of his other works and while a critical disappointment in America, was a huge hits with the Cahiers du Cinema critics. There’s some amazing location shots of Quebec and a wonderful lead performance from Montgomery Clift as a conflicted priest, who the director struggled to work with on account of his method approach.

Bonus shot of Clift because the frames weren’t especially exciting:

New 20:20:

A Most Violent Year?

No, not A Most Violent Year.

Operation Finale?

It is Operation Finale. A rather disappointing effort. The discussion of the morale issues is superficial and the last act seems borrowed from Argo.

Over to you, anonymgeist!

Hey, look, it’s that guy who played the lawyer in Loving!

The new 20:20

Trigger warning for Tom! It’s Tobe Hooper’s underappreciated comedy sequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, starring Dennis Hopper just before he cleaned himself off for his banner 1986 year (Blue Velvet, Hoosiers, River’s Edge). The last film the director made as part of his not-so-successful three picture deal with Cannon, and the only one to turn a profit at the box office. “Incoming mail!”

That’s the one! It was much better (well, much less terrible) than I expected going in. I’m glad they decided to go the comedy route with this one.

Here’s the new 20:20

Well I only know mary elizabeth mastrantonio from scarface, robin hood or consenting adults.

Not enough coke for scarface

Not enough tights for Robin Hood

So im guessing Consenting Adults.

It’s not Consenting Adults.

You expect us to believe you haven’t seen The Abyss? Please.

She was also the ‘girlfriend who’s gonna hold him back,’ so I’m going with The Color of Money.

Yeah, I’m guessing that’s Paul Newman’s silver hair in the foreground.

I think so too, or at least it could be his head. It also reminds me that there was a scene where she attempts to woo Paul Newman’s character, though I’m not sure if that is it.

Ah, I bet you’re right. I was trying to think back to what 80s movie she was in with Richard Gere.

-Tom

She was in a movie with Richard Gere? Now I’m the one having a hard time remembering.

You nailed it, Skipper. I’m shocked how many QT3 folks have 80s Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio tucked away on standby.

It’s quite an interesting movie. A quasi-sequel of sorts to Robert Rossen’s The Hustler with Newman reprising his role as “Fast Eddie” Felson, though now as a mentor figure who hocks expensive liquor on the side, with Tom Cruise having a blast as the young hot shot. Michael Ballhaus’s camera’s always moving and Schoonmaker’s editing is verging on erratic during the pool sequences.

Just miss out on some backseat banter between Cruise and Newman
