I’ve played a lot of JRPGs. I can handle that one for y’all.

Malaria kills way more people than breast cancer. But I don’t see many people wearing ribbons and running 5Ks to raise funds and awareness of malaria.

People rarely base their clamoring on actuarial tables. Oh, and the official ribbon for miscarriage is pink-and-blue.

There is an argument that can be made against abortion that isn’t grounded in religion. But most anti-abortion sentiment is driven by religiosity - and that gap is the inability of those with religiosity to distinguish between conception and “personhood”. Most people, even on this forum, will almost certainly premise (or discover) their anti-abortion feelings in religious terms.

There is some evidence that sexism and anti-abortion beliefs coincide with men, on the whole. I’m sure those men would contest this primarily because they would reject the definitions of what counts as “sexist”.

A scientifically driven view of human rights and abortion rights would almost certainly be able to find a compromise point between conception and birth.

The horrible, Handmaid’s Tale stretch goal is to hypothesize, think of all the children who could be born if only.

Where does 0 tolerance of abortion end, and consent begin?

What about the transgender zygotes??

it seems clear that, at some level, a key anti-abortion motivation is the desire to subjugate women. I doubt that all anti-abortion advocates are so motivated, but that is the core motivation of the leadership. Which explains the corollary antipathy towards birth control: it’s about putting women back in their ‘proper’ state where they belong.

Sadly i’ve met many blue collar men who seem decent enough but genuinely lean on the Bible and say things like “Well, a man is the master of his home!” and believe that there is biblical sanction for strong gender roles; ie, men telling their wives what for.

Oftentimes this goes along with them going through some kind of religious conversion. They give up the hard drinking and partying and irresponsibility - but they get something in return as well.

I’ve also known many of these guys get divorced because they can’t understand that marriage is a relationship and not some kind of contract.

OR

God does not consider miscarriage, and therefore the death of unborn babies, to be wrong. It’s not a sin if God does it, right?

This is the same ridiculous arguments racists use. If you call someone racist enough, suddenly they become racists… no, calling someone names does not make another person who is not racist racist, and calling someone something they don’t want to hear does not suddenly make them a I don’t care about anyone else Republican either.

The violent drunk wouldn’t be like that if you all didn’t keep calling him out about it. Sheesh.

Calling someone racist doesn’t make them racist, but calling someone racist if they aren’t will likely make them refuse to support you.

Yeah, they’ll not support us, they’ll just go support the… checks notes… racists. Which really pretty much makes them indistinguishable.

Also a lot of racists don’t think they’re racists.
They think as long as you don’t march with the Klan you’re not racist.
Then they say racist shit and support racist causes and think it’s fine.

Ever since law school, I’ve found it funny that in most states, if you punch a pregnant woman in the stomach and cause her to miscarry it’s murder. And that the legal definition of murder requires taking a human life. We send people to prison for the most serious crime we have - the taking of a human life.

But if the same woman and a doctor decide to just vacuum out the same thing, it’s just removing a blob of tissue.

I’m pro-choice. But like with many other issues, I wish we could just admit the difficulty and inherent contradictions of this issue, instead of pretending it is obvious and clear.

Numbers chapter 5. God is totally cool with abortion.

This thread just loves its abortion-talk!

Thank you for making this honest point.

Now could we get back to the 2020 election. Mayor Pete has been introducing a number of proposal aimed at African Americans recently and he is still polling 0% with them.

Meanwhile, I’ve spent several days with a good friend, Lifelong Democrat and Bay Area resident, he disliked Harris when she was SF DA, much less DA for CA. He thinks she’d be a bad President and puts her near the bottom of the pack.

I’m becoming resigned to a President Biden.

Oh, it is difficult and there are inherent contradictions aplenty. I’m pro-choice because the alternative is to use state-sanctioned force to compel women to carry pregnancies to term, and that seems obviously wrong to me, and likely to lead to even worse abuses of power against women.

Looking at these results, I wouldn’t bet on it.

I’m resigned to accepting Biden as the eventual nominee but really hoping whoever wins the nomination is not a straight white dude.
