Political pets are a double edged sword. Remember Checkers!
Nixon may have had … issues making people warm up to him, but he at least understood the concept of empathy and how it could be used to his advantage.
Trump doesn’t. Trump could never pull off a Checkers speech because he simply does not and cannot understand why anyone cares so much about furry blobs of saliva and germs. His Checkers speech would be, “My wife wanted to get a dog. But I got some new golf clubs instead. Best in the world, everyone says so.”

The man doesn’t even care about his non-Ivanka children so having feelings for a pet must be a completely foreign concept to him.

I think the dog thing works because one of the best signals we have for whether someone we don’t know is a Good Person is whether they like animals and treat them well (no offense to the dog haters out there… Well, maybe a little!).
That’s what Hollywood keeps telling us.
But you know what, it works. No matter how cynically I am, if I see a protagonist be kind to a dog, I know that guy is a Good Person.

It does speak to how they are as a person. You can replace dog with “a living entity dependent on us as human beings”. Pets, children, the sick, the hurt, the elderly, etc. How we care for others who need us says a lot about who we are.

But there are some exceptions…

Does that look like a happy dog? It does not.
A very good dog? Yes. Happy? No.
Sorry, the protagonist should be shown to be with a dog that likes him or her.
That dog doesn’t seem to like the guy in the picture.

I don’t know, seems happy enough!

His owner had no shortage of bones to give him.

Dog: That’s a big drop. Right to the rocks. If I jump I probably won’t feel a thing…
C’mon, Adolf loved Blondi. He even made sure the Russians didn’t get her…
Really harsh after he brought back all those manufacturing jobs and stuck it to all those corporate elites.
I know, after he saved the steel industry and all

Folks will vote for Trump even if they don’t think he deserves it because he isn’t a Dem. Those numbers won’t be the final result, they’re about the peak of what a Dem could get if everything went 100% perfect, which it won’t.
There’s also the folks ashamed of admit they vote for Trump too, but not that many these days.
