I think that is Amy Klobacher?

Yep, Pete and Amy on the same flight, booked in seats next to one another.

And they’ll be debating one another in a couple of days.

The @united, which I admit I didn’t even notice at first.

Some good data on why turning out the based in 2020 won’t be enough.

Another canard about “socialism” from a “Third Way” democrat.

I have just one question for the purveyors of this mobilization theory. Can you give me one example of a competitive election where it’s actually worked ?

Can the writer name one time since 1972 Democrats haven’t run a centrist for the WH? Had NH Nader voters pulled the lever for Gore instead, he’d have won the Presidency, Florida notwithstanding.

Oh but he’s comparing results in +R districts or the governor race in MI. Ok, we can play that game too. I present “far left” Tami Baldwin from WI compared to “centrist” Evers results:

First point, “bread and butter” economic policies like fixing roads that the writer is extolling isn’t at odds with “far left” health care or education policies. Second point, there are far more people who don’t vote because they feel their votes won’t matter compared against the tiny slice of disaffected Republican voters. Last point, I’m not arguing that “only” progressives can turn out the vote - but what I am saying it’s bullocks to insist tepid, moderate (aka corporate) Democrats are the only ones who can win an election.

Yeah, a pox on those third way grifters.

That article is specifically saying energizing progressives (and specifically “socialists”) isn’t enough to win. This is true. However, energizing Democrats is. See: 2008, 2012 (note the author doesn’t bother to mention those elections.)

“Democratic base” is not a synonym for “progressive.” Neither is “centrist”, though that’s what the author wants you to believe.

Yep, I know plenty of young people who will stay home if someone like Biden gets the nom. They certainly aren’t centrists.

Then those people are fucking imbeciles, and they will deserve what they get as a result of their childishness and laziness.

People like Susan Seranadon are ultimately enablers of Trump. Their actions have directly led to all of the evil that Trump has done thus far.

No, voting for Republicans and Trump directly lead to the evils they do. Protest voting indirectly leads to it.

And listen I’ll vote for Joe Biden in a heartbeat but he’s no Warren. Joe Biden strikes me as someone who feels entitled to it. Warren actually cares. I think Sanders cares too but he’s salty about 2016 still and has a bit of entitlement in him now as well.

I think it’s going to be hard to explain to a college aged kid, who has only known Trump and Obama (barely), to get behind someone that doesn’t inspire them. If you can remember being that age, you’re all reaction and emotion and seldom thinking broadly or long-term. These kids, and voters in general probably, aren’t swayed by logical arguments.

Once you get a stink on you you’re doomed. Biden has the Hillary stink, he won’t be able to shake it, and the surest way to lose in 2020 is to nominate Joe Biden. Don’t talk to me about old people and “centrists” because those are just Republicans and will vote for Trump. Get the people who stay home to show up.

This part I agree with.

This part I don’t. But hey, guess what, I’m not going to argue with you about it (again). :D

I am totally with you on this argument but the Florida 2018 election threw a lot of water on that idea for me. We got the most progressive candidate in the primary (because no preferential voting, it was FPTP) and during a Democratic sweep election we still failed to elect him and elected a racist instead.

But my new running theory is that FL demographics have shifted even more to the right with all the old people moving here. The voting map is so deeply red in our exurbs, which tend to be retirement communities now by population (obviously there are quite a lot of rural folks too).

Was gonna say the same. +1

Did someone say Warren?

I got the chance to go to her rally in Austin yesterday. Here in Austin it has been 100+ degrees with zero rain for like the last 500 days, but shortly before her arrival we finally got a large rain shower. Does she have supernatural powers, and the ability to bring rain and new life to parched lands? All signs point to yes. Also right before Warren took the stage we got this rainbow:

and shortly after that a flight of white doves took to the air. Which is weird because this area is usually more pigeon/crow territory.

(book report starts… now)

I was glad that I got the chance to see her speak in person, she is basically the same in real life as what you see on TV. From the first moment on stage she had a ton of energy and seemed about 20 years younger than her calendar age. At no point was she shy about using a “come at me bro” stance with her chest puffed and arms out wide to the air. Her speech was about an hour long and was an example of understated but masterful rhetoric. Many times when politicians speechify it is dumb and bombastic and stilted and you feel kind of insulted that they are directing this pablum at you. Warren’s speech interwove intelligence, emotion/passion/fire, and humor. She was completely comfortable speaking in front of the crowd (maybe 1000 people?) and was extremely adept at laying out complex ideas and injustices in direct language and connecting it to everyday concerns and experiences. I also liked learning more about her background; apparently in her youth she was a special needs teacher which I think will be a big help in connecting with the American public at large. Anyway, listening to her speak for an hour raised zero concerns and completely confirmed that she would be absolutely great as the Democratic candidate and president. If you get the chance, I’d recommend one her rallies. I spent about 2 hours in travel time and a few more hours out in the heat and did not feel cheated.

Anecdata alert! Let’s all overreact because someone on the internet knows some people to whom that person is ascribing behavior by projection and guessing!

For this theory to work, wouldn’t there have to be a time when there weren’t a lot of old people moving to Florida? I mean, that theory suggests that old people moving to Florida is a new thing, when it’s a thing that goes back waaaay into the past.

I hope that I didn’t misrepresent the fact that this is not a proper poll. Maybe you’re overreacting a bit? I think two people replied to me.

I’m very aware of that as I’ve lived in Florida my entire life. The country went like +5 or +6 D in 2018 and Florida was basically even. In years past Florida was more competitive. My other theory is just that it was a midterm and Floridians are lazy. We’ll know in 2020 but I’m feeling like Florida isn’t competitive anymore. I seriously hope I’m wrong and it’s probably just 2018 doldrums from losing the election to a racist (especially while so many in the rest of the country celebrated).

Who overreacted? Even if there are only three of them, it’s accurate to call them imbeciles.

Thanks for the report!
