iTunes sync of video to iPad? How?

OK - there must be something simple I’m missing.

I’ve got some movies on my laptop, about to travel, want to move them to my iPad. They are in iTunes. I assumed I could simply sync them with iTunes on my iPad.

But when I open iTunes on my iPad, all I get is the iTunes store. All I can see on there are movies or TV shows I’ve purchased from iTunes.

If I click on the Videos icon on my iPad - same thing.

Where can I sync the videos I have in my iTunes Movies and TV shows folder in my laptop Tunes into my iPad?

Thanks

In iTunes on your desktop, is the checkbox checked to sync videos?

Don’t open iTunes on your iPad, that is only the iTunes store. The Videos app is where the synced videos should show up eventually.

Edit: meant to clarify - I am asking about cloud type moving, not when connected via a USB cable.

I thought so - ill double check.

your movies share on the home network with home sharing on. they won’t work over cloud unless you use air video + air video server.

Hmm. I have Air Video but no idea how to set up an air video server. I’d like to be able to watch movies/TV shows I have, on my iPad, without having to use iTunes or the Apple built in apps.

you run it on the computer with your movies and it handles the heavy lifting of transcoding. you can queue up movies to compress too. works best over local wifi network but if your router has upnp and it works with air video, you can set up (with a password recommended) a connection from external through 3g/4g/wifi-away-from home using a pin code.

if you have any android devices, i find www.emitapp.com has both android and ios apps.

steamtome/servetome and isub music streamer are 2 other options.

Did you buy or rent the video? If you rent, I think it’s a little different. I remember having to go through an extra step to move the movie onto my iPad, after I downloaded it (through iTunes) on my laptop. Let me know if this applies to you and I’ll double check in iTunes for where to find the UI. I remember having to go to the Apple store and get one of the clerks to help me. I felt so helpless and old. :)

I buy and these are mainly DVDs of mine I rip to the PC and then put on the iPad.

Appears the simplest route is just connecting with the USB cable, importing the files, then putting the iPad in manual management (so I don’t have to sync everything) and dragging the movie file into the iPad.

Man, streaming would be so much easier.

How so? This is for a business trip, e.g. in an airport, on the plane, in the hotel, etc.

hmm, if the shows are already in your tv shows/movies section, you should just be able to select your ipad when it’s connected and select ‘sync tv/movies’

Yeah, this is what I do, though note that you can set manual vs sync for each media type, so it’s not an all or nothing proposition. It seems the big hurdle for you is trying to do this wirelessly (why are you hung up on this, by the way?). You should be able to do it over WiFi eventually, but you’ll have to enable wireless syncing first, which in Apple’s infinite wisdom you have to be connected via USB to do. Also I’m not 100% certain drag and drop (within iTunes) works over WiFi. It might just be syncing.

Oh and Air Video is a must for any iOS device owner. Saves you having to manually transcode videos into the relatively limited selection of formats iOS will accept natively. It’s very easy to set up, too.
