Japanese Visual Novels (Clannad, Umineko)

Thanks for the write-up!

Sounds like I have to play this at some point.

Did you play it in English or Japanese?

Asami Imai is voicing one of the characters? That’s awesome, I love her as Noire in the Neptunia games.

She does a great job with Makise. Simply fantastic. Actually, the whole cast is excellent (unlike many other VNs) which is why Steins;Gate stands out in that regard.

I played in English. I don’t know if the fan translation is much different than the official one I read, but it was very well done. The only change I’ve heard about is that in the official translation they changed Ruka to Luka.

So where does one buy this game? It’s not on Steam, right?

I’m holding out in the vain hope that it appears on Steam in some distant future. If you want it now you’d have to order from JAST directly.

Or just use WarpRattler’s potentially less objectionable links below.

Physical copy or download, though it’s from the same people linked above, just through a site without any porn links. $40 for either version. (The $60 limited edition included a digital copy and some other goodies, but is no longer available.)

JAST USA supposedly wants to get the game on Steam, but they haven’t actually made any efforts toward doing so since getting rejected long before Greenlight was a thing.

Since I backed World End Economica episodes 2 & 3 on Kickstarter, I’ve been given a Steam key for episode 1 that I don’t have any use for. Since the giveaway thread is for chumps and Steam account padders, I figure anyone who would open this thread up and read this post is considerably more likely to actually play the damn game if I were to hand them a key. If you aren’t interested or don’t intend to play the game, I ask that you bow out and not participate.

The offer begins now. No restrictions attached, but you are required to be the first person to PM me the author’s name. I’ll update this post once it’s claimed.

EDIT: Warning has claimed the code as of now.

Speaking of visual novels, Corpse Party is now out on iphone.

I wish Corpse Party had been a pure visual novel. Making it in RPG Maker did the experience no favors.

Looking forward to playing Corpse Party when it comes to PC this year.

Not a total visual novel, but I powered through Dangan Ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and am ready for the sequel next month. Really enjoyed it, though I wouldn’t put it above 999 or VLR. Also thought it was overly stylized in some aspects. At times I wished it was more straightforward like Ace Attorney instead of having to shoot truth bullets and play hangman or a rhythm battle thing. I found it nearly impossible to play this game in short bursts and ended up doing a chapter a day. You spend an hour reading the story, someone dies, another hour spent investigating, then two hours for the overly long trials seemed to be the norm. I just couldn’t stop until the trial was over.

I also played through Phantom of Inferno which Murbella mentioned on page one awhile back. You play the game off a DVD which is kinda weird. There are passwords you have to write down to continue if you DVD player doesn’t save your spot. It had a wonky translation which sort of added to the charm. It reminded me of a cheesy 80’s action movie. Not the greatest plot and some parts are really predicable, but it was entertaining throughout. This reviewdoes a pretty good job of summing it up without spoilers. It’s also pretty cheap. It was also remade, but there isn’t a translation I believe. Never seen any of the anime or OVA’s yet.

CLANNAD IS COMING TO STEAM. I’M SO DAMN HYPE.

Now I’ll have an excuse to go back and play the routes I didn’t get to last time.

Planetarian is out on Steam now. $10, with a launch discount knocking it down to $7.50.

Already read it but bought it anyway. I’d love for someone to translate the side stories, but the odds of that are unfortunately slim to nil.

Cross-posting from the Kickstarter thread:

I was just going to post that if you hadn’t already. Also now at $92K.

It’s at $145K now.

It also looks like they’re looking at possibly adding the HD assets from the PS3 port to the English PC version.

I wish they had pledge options for getting a physical copy of the game alongside a bunch of physical goodies, rather than all the higher tiers having a digital copy and requiring a $50 add-on pledge for a physical copy.

Zero Escape 3 announced for 3DS and Vita, Summer 2016!

Announced for Japan, or English-speaking territories as well? But either way, so happy. The end of 2 is such a brutal cliffhanger the series couldn’t have ended there.

It was just announced at the Aksys panel at Anime Expo a short while ago, so presumably that’s for a western release.
