Javascript question: Testing if pop-ups are blocked

I have some apps I’ve written for work that use pop-ups (using javascript window.open() function) to display error messages and such.

Does anyone have some code that can check to see if pop-ups are disabled? Because, of course, programs like pop-up stopper totally hose that functionality.

I don’t think you can check to see if popups are blocked; maybe create a window and then see if it actually showed up, as a test?

Have the popup insert a cookie? You would have to do something like main page - with a link to go forward, and on that page have the cookie setting popup, then next page check for that cookie.

Or do like i do for evilemail - just tell - no popup or add blockers and make sure you have javascript on.
