Jeff Minter's Space Giraffe: Xbox 360

Many of you will be familiar with Jeff Minter, author of such 8-bit classics as Gridrunner, Trip-a-Tron, Mama Llama, Hover Bovver, Iridis Alpha and Meta-Galactic Llamas Battle at the Edge of Time. And of course Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar. Most recently he co-authored the Xbox 360 music visualizer.

Well, he’s just posted some screenshots from his latest game, Space Giraffe, due to be released on Xbox Live Arcade later this year

(Warning, potentially NSFW)

I’m sure this will be great, but what’s with the foul language?

Holy shitter does that ever fucking look cunty! Gosh darn piss!

I’m sure this will be great, but what’s with the foul language?

Yak (Jeff Minter) uses the foul language to prevent sites like IGN posting shots like this (essentially WIP/Tech Test images he posts on his blog/forum) as “exclusive shots of Jeff Minter’s new game” when they’re not exactly representative of everything he’s going for. It happened on Unity, leading to a bunch of silliness, so now he throws in some NSFW language as a (tongue in cheek) safeguard.

Hilarious reason, just wish all the pics had the smegging smeg.

He should just name this game “WTF?”

It looks like someone threw up on the screen. In other words, classic Minter.

Smegma. Now that’s a word you don’t see everyday.

I think I’d describe the game as trying to play Tempest 2000 with Geiss overlaid on top of it, and dropping LSD at the same time as you start quoting Trainspotting’s loveable swearing barfighter.

Ah, gaming’s most lovable sheep fucker.

I’ve always wished that Jez San, Sir Peter, and Jeff would team up for a game.

Dammit, Jeff, at least finish that PC port of Neon before you start on something else.

Excuse me, I have to go start a band.

Unless you watch Red Dwarf a lot.

No, Red Dwarf is “Smeg”. I had to look up smegma. I’m left feeling vaguely ill.

Right, which is short for smegma. They wanted to use the dirtiest thing they could without actually using a “banned” word.

There’s a clip out there where the actors and writers are doing a Q&A, and a little kid asks “What does smeg mean?” The actors collapse on the floor laughing and the writers flee the stage. It’s pretty cool.

Oh. Ew. I always thought smeg was just an outright made up word.

Yikes. Clearly Yak learned nothing from the mistake that was Tempest 3000.

You didn’t mention Llamatron and Revenge of the Mutant Camels!

Yeah but you have to give me points for Meta-Galactic Llamas Battle at the Edge of Time.
