Okay, not an exact quote, but on Meet the Press this weekend, in a conversation about Obama’s executive order to close the Guantanamo Bay prison within a year, House Minority Leader John “Terrible Kisser” Boehner proposed the following:
Boehner: “If the liberals in America believe that Gitmo aughta go, then maybe we aughta just open Alcatraz, uh, and move those prisoners there.”
David Gregory: “Now it’s a national park, and not really suitable for prisoners, however.”
Boehner: “It’s very secure.”
I’m pretty sure he was trying to be a douche. On behalf of homosexual Jewish pornographers across these sun-dappled 50 states, “hi John!!”
Anyway, he’s just being snarky, but I always love how certain conservatives assume that all liberals are hypocrites. Usually, they project when doing this. So they’ll say something like “Liberals wouldn’t want Mexicans living in their neighborhood either!” when in fact many liberals (and conservatives too for that matter) would have zero problem with that *.
Fictionalized example. No foreign allies were hurt by this example.
I’ve noticed this too. Where does this stereotype come from that liberals are hypocrites? I can see where they get a lot of their stereotypes from: liberals are stupid, bossy, want to control your life, self-righteous, etc. etc. I see where those come from. But where did the hypocrisy thing come from? I mean, I really wouldn’t mind if the terrorists were housed in the local high security jail near me.
I know one source (though it’s insufficient by itself to account for the pervasiveness of the stereotype) was the well-publicized opposition to school vouchers by some prominent wealthy liberals who sent their children to private schools. The Republican spin ran like this: “public schools aren’t good enough for THEIR children, but you aren’t rich and YOUR kids have to suffer through them because they won’t approve vouchers.”
Yeah, who gives a shit where they are in jail? Oh no, that there correctional facility, that’s only fer the rapists and the child fondlers and the murderers that love America!
This is a pretty big deal right now in the DC Metro area. There are some vouchers that low-income african americans are using in DC. However, the Dem Congress wants to cut the voucher funding much to the parents’ chagrin.
The stereotype comes from the busing mess of the 1960s and 1970s, where the white working class was definitely not happy about what the white liberal elites came up with. Everything else is minor by comparision.
I can see that. And it’s interesting that both this issue and the one I mentioned involve public education, where the elite could afford to opt out of the consequences of their actions but the average citizen could not.
Clearly, if the terrorists are allowed into stateside correctional facilities they will escape and bomb a neighborhood near you.
I have a hard time understanding this fear-mongering. Odds are they’ll get beaten, shanked and killed in our normal prisons, if they aren’t isolated entirely from the general prison population. Republicans like to pretend they’ll be out on your street corner trying to kill you or something.
The voucher thing is weird. You’d think the Republican line on that would be “Want fancy education? Pull yourself up by the bootstraps and pay for it yourself, bitches!” Aren’t vouchers, well, government handouts? The kind they’re always bitching against?
I fully support the reopening of Alcatraz for the housing of all white collar executive criminals. Hell, we can even keep it open as a park and start a new tour of the cell blocks where the rest of us can pay $5 to see the fuckers that destroyed the global economy and scream at them. Tell me that’s not a winner idea, I dare you.
