John Updike Dies

Dead at 76. RIP.

Rabbit is at rest. RIP.

i’ve only read A&P and Nicholson Baker’s Essay “U & I”

I know the Rabbit books are the big ones but is there anything out there which a total noob should consider?

I quite liked Brazil. A friend who’d actually lived in Brazil hated it, so I don’t know if it’s much on verisimilitude. But hell, it’s a fable (with magic!), and quite different from his standard reflections on WASPs and aging.

Also, it’s been a rough year for some of my favorite authors. David Foster Wallace, Donald Westlake, and now Updike all in a calendar year. R.I.P.

Arch-WASP culture will never be the same.

I really got bent out of shape with this news. I’ve loved Updike for ten years now. I read four of his books just since late last month.

The Maples Stories (which appear in several different collections) are fantastic. My favorite of his novels is Couples.

I’ve always been a huge fan of his short stories.

I guess after winning that Bad Sex in Literature Lifetime Award, he really had nothing left to accomplish.

Sweet holy jesus.
