Just got an Amazon Echo - now what do I do with it?

I won a free Amazon Echo and it is being delivered by Amazon today. So, for those of you who own one, what cool things do I need to do with it (and what supposedly cool things aren’t worth the effort?)

Also, how easy (or not) is it to move from one room to another? We tend to be in the sunroom one day or evening, the den another, etc.

Thanks!

  • Alexa, what’s the weather?
  • Alexa, set laundry timer for 45 minutes
  • Alexa, what’s up?
  • Alexa, turn off the lights (you will need wifi lights or outlets to do this)
  • Alexa, turn on the TV (you will need a harmony hub to do this)
  • Alexa, play smooth jazz
  • Alexa, volume up
  • Alexa, set alarm for 845 AM
  • Alexa, play the WTF podcast
  • Alexa, call Jimmy
  • Alexa, mute (if you have a fireTV or fireTV stick, voice commands work)

You can move it whenever you want, but of course it will need a power plug and your wifi needs to reach.

Unplug it , move it, plug it in, it should reaquire you wifi automatically.

We use ours as a night time alarm clock / radio. Also for weather, news, and kitchen timer. Plus you can order Alexa only deals through it.

I pay the extra $4 a month for Prime Music, so I can pretty much hear anything I want, and just ask for it to play. :)

Also wish it good morning every day for a fun fact!

I really them.

Cnet list of all commands:

Even without paid Prime Music, you get a ton of radio stations with normal Prime and it works fine. You can also connect it to Pandora or Spotify etc.

We changed the name of ours to Echo because my wife’s name is Alexis and there was mayhem.

Echo play WUNC radio (or whoever your favorite station).

Echo what are your top skills?

Echo sing a song

Echo what’s the news? Triggers a short news overview

My kids’ favorite: Echo tell me a knock knock joke

You can ask it anything fact based and usually get an answer.

Music, alarm clock, timer, and weather report are our main uses.

Should have made your wife change her name, I mean its probably confusing for Alexa now. ;)

Well, she did change her first and last names when we got married, which also was mayhem. Alexis was her middle name.

Do you have an iPhone? Let it have a conversation with Siri. No kidding, search for Alexa talks to Siri on YouTube.

I got a free Echo dot a few months ago. It’s not as functional as I’d hoped, but part of the problem was not having a worthwhile built-in speaker so you’ll probably find more uses with a full Echo than I did with the Dot. Right now the main use I have for it is to yell “Alexa add to shopping list” as I’m cooking something and use up the last of something.

Just plug in one of the bluetooth speakers everybody has lying around unused and the sound quality will be much improved.

“Alexa, porn me.”

Who has all these bluetooth speakers? I never owned one, till I got my echo earlier in the year. :p

My most used phrase is “Alexa STOP!” every time my kids ask her to play the same song over and over again.

Also “Alexa play Jeopardy” to play a daily game of Jeopardy and then “Alexa shutup” when she starts talking because I took more than 3 seconds to answer the Jeopardy question.

Change the alert word again from “Echo” to “Computer” and enjoy feeling like Captain Kirk.

Seriously. “Computer, self-destruct.”

I’ve got one that can float in the pool with me. I haven’t found a shower strap I like either, and… well both my sisters don’t want me to waste water taking longer showers to finish my songs.

@JeffL find someone else with an Alexa and start leaving them messages. It’s fun for a few days if you get a newbie until they figure out why their Echo keeps glowing.

That’s something I actually used my Echo for! “Alexa, why are you green?”

Echo messaging!

$10 off an item that you ordered before, and re-order now through Alexa.

Shopping list.

“Alexa add … to shopping list.”

Open the Alexa app on phone, and it’s all there.
