I am just glad I didn’t end up with no characters left to play. Of course now that I am reading more about elves, and wizards…I am very afraid of spell casting lol. In choosing my spells, I was very tempted to take feather fall for obvious reasons…still debating taking it instead of Color Spray.

I’m thinking Penchus the Dancing Pony Trainer might have had an epiphany when he gazed into the pit of chaos, and was forced to choose between grabbing the loot from the crumbling ziggurat or saving one of the unconscious townsfolk. Maybe wealth is secondary to serving a higher purpose. Now, which god speaks to him the most?
Cleric is the route Sam would have taken had he survived…poor Sam.

We’ve all seen too much death!
Also, cleric seems one of the best ways for a generally incompetent stat loser like Penchus to assist the party until he is inevitably destroyed by his own disapproving god.
Dalton is headed for clerichood himself, though he will be glad to stay and minister to the remaining village citizens. Apini I never really had any idea of what the heck I was going to do with, so I’m glad the rest of my group survived. Gundabar and Bill will both make good front line monster choppers so it’s just a matter of deciding who to go with. I’m leaning towards Gundabar since I’ve always had a fondness for dwarven fighters in just about every rpg I play. On the other hand the halfling would be something new to try. Bah, decisions decisions!
Sadly, I can not play this week. I’ll be away on a family trip.
But in the meantime, we can talk about the fighter. Actually, in DCC, the term is warrior, but I prefer the old ways.
The warrior is generally what you would expect. He gets the biggest hit die (a d12) and can use any weapon and wear any armor. But the thing that makes a warrior really stand out is the Deed Die. During a warrior’s turn he gets to roll a d3 and the result is the modifier to the warrior’s to hit and damage for this activation.
Additionally, and more importantly, the warrior can declare a “mighty deed” with each attack. This Deed is a dramatic combat maneuver within the scope of the current combat. If the deed die, the d3, comes up as a 3, then the mighty deed is successful. This deed can be anything the warrior can dream up. Want to swing from a chandelier and bowl over the pack of orcs? Go for it. Want to stab the cyclops in the eye? Have at it. Want to push the bandit king into the otyugh pit? Good idea.
The book has a lot of examples to help adjudicate the effectiveness of mighty deeds, but the overall principle is to reward creativity. When a warrior goes up a level he gets a bigger deed die, a D4, a D6, and so on, but the success level is always a 3. The higher the deed die result the more effective the deed.
I love this mechanic. I love that the warrior has an ability that relies upon the creativity of the player. It may be challenging to adjudicate it consistently every time, but I think it will be a blast to see it in play.
Enjoy the trip Rob! Just as an FYI to the group and any others reading on, Drive Thru RPG/RPG now are having a GM’s day sale. All the Goodman games products are included and currently 25% off. The sale only has about 26 hours left as of this posting, but the sale makes the DCC rulebook PDF only $18.75. Since today also happens to be my payday I’ll be picking it up once I get home from work.
Who is up for game night this week? Thursday looks good for me.
I’m on my phone so this may be a truncated post.
Everyone has at least one character left, but those with extra should not dismiss them. These guys are in your “stable” and you may end up playing them if bad things happen to your primary guy. All of these guys are first level and won’t need to go through the Funnel again.
Humans can pick any of the four human classes. Your stats will point you in a general direction, but you are free to choose whichever class you like.
For spellcasters we’ll have to roll up spells at the beginning of the next session.
I haven’t figured out how we’ll track characters yet. Maybe a fillable PDF kept on Dropbox is the best solution.
I’m in for this week. I picked up the DCC rulebook pdf and read through the classes so for my group this is how I see them:
Dalton - Cleric
Gundabar - Dwarf
Sailfish Bill - Halfling
Apini - Wizard
Have you been able to find a fillable PDF for the character sheets? I downloaded the ones from the Goodman games website, but I couldn’t enter in any info. Poor Gundabar, he gets to pick a special weapon to use his luck modifier on for to hit rolls, unfortunately his luck modifier is -2!
I am in for this week, and anxiously await rolling up HP and the rest of the spell information.

Probably not going to be able to make it tomorrow. Wife has as meeting at night and that leaves me with a hyper active toddler.
Alex can’t make it this week, but I don’t mind playing with three players. I think we could handle it by having all three players run two characters. Shellfishguy can choose two of his four that seem the most interesting. Arkon can play Oolorin and a zero level villager that made it to the ship before the wave hit. Xahlt can play Penchus and another zero level that made it onto the boat. We would focus on the 1st levels, but the zero levels would probably be important members of the party, standing in front of more precious characters. And if they survive, then you’ll have more 1st levels to work with.
I think we’ll have two clerics and an elf to level up, so we’ll get to roll up a bunch of spells. It should be interesting.
Also, I subscribed to Roll20. I really like it so far, and I’m curious about dynamic lighting, although I won’t use it tonight. I also like being able to work on my campaign on my ipad.
Sounds cool Rob! I’m thinking I’ll be focusing on Gundabar as my first choice. The deed die and great deed systems just really sound cool to me. After that I’ll likely use Bill since the halfling dual weapon combat and the way their luck works (can be used for the parties rolls not just their own) also sound pretty great.
Rob, do I need to roll up a 0 level character?
Sure! Although you should consider him more of a henchman to Oolorin.
I think that makes tonight’s party a halfling, dwarf, elf, and cleric. Since the demi-humans tend to be versions of thief, fighter and mage, we should be pretty well balanced tonight.
Thanks for the session tonight guys. I’m sorry so much was admin, but it was fun to go through the process. I’m glad you guys were rolling fire on hit points.
I predict mayhem and shenanigans from that ventriloquism spell with the necrotic battery side effect. 1d6 damage at low levels is credible damage output in a pinch. We can cap the range at 30 feet as that is generally the range of the spell.
I put Penchus and Oolorin in the shared notes and they look great. I’ll PM shellfishguy about getting his characters.
I enjoyed the start of the adventure. Having the Justicia connection opened up a storyline that I didn’t think you guys would ever know about. Father Beacom is going to start proclaiming the return of Justicia in the flesh in the town square. But he may also warn his congregation about the evils of blasphemous elvenkind.
I have to say it’s nice having such an easy character creation system. It was all painless and with rolling Oolorin’s spells, pretty entertaining too. I’ll sign up for a dropbox account later today to make swapping the character sheets around easier. Just PM me whatever info I’ll need to get them to you. Out of the two writable PDF’s you gave us last night, I really prefer the second one. It’s a lot nicer artistically and feels better organized. Looking forward to seeing what kind of mayhem our merry little band will get into next!
I agree the second writable PDF was better in my opinion. Oloorin certainly has some interesting conditions on his spells, and yes it was fun rolling up the random aspects of the character.
