I love how it’s one of the demonic evil skin series they’ve been doing, but it’s still terrifically flamboyant. Also it is sort of purple-ish-pink looking.

Is there such thing as a non-item-dependent champion who does decent damage through midgame? Not a support like Taric or Soraka, but someone who can actually put out pressure and DPS in a sidelane but not need to take farm to stay relevant through midgame.
Depends on what you mean by “through midgame.” Jarvan, Xin Zhao, and Irelia are all jerks that can do stupid amounts of damage with no real items for the first 20 minutes of the game. Basically the hated tanky deeps characters. They will require more farm than someone playing pure support, and then have to start farming at some point to get items to keep the deeps up as people start buying armor. They also aren’t so good at feeding kills to other people since they are the ones doing the murdering and making enemies flip their keyboards.

AP scaling autoattacking deeps? At least we have a wacky hybrid champ instead of another tanky deeps.
That’s pretty much what I mean; someone who doesn’t have to get minion kills to remain relevant in lane for the first 20 minutes or so, allowing for a hard carry to get minion kills without being totally boring. :)
Maybe I will learn Jarvan or xin Zhao…
Renekton is also quite a bruiser without very many items.

God fucking damnit, I absolutely destroy Ezreal mid, he ganks bot repeatedly despite having wards up AND mia calls AND pings (they just ignored 'em, I guess), then Kassadin takes blue buff (Kassadin at this point has nothing but Mejai’s, Sorc Boots, and Tear) instead of giving it to the Brand with a deathcap and blasting wand.
Fuck that Kassadin.
Morde can do a surprising amount of damage all game with no items too.

Tanky deeps typically need either levels or items to be scary. Solo lanes give them both, which is why they’re either sent top or given the jungle. If you send one duo lane, you better hope you’re getting kills, because if you aren’t, you’re probably fucked.
And if your plan is “wtfpwn the lane or lose the game,” then pick Garen ;)

See, what I’m looking for is the answer to this question.
I’m stuck in a sidelane with a pubby who took a farm-dependent hero like Tristana or Tryndamere.
What hero do I pick who is able to actually do some work himself, rather than relying completely on the pubby? So not something like Soraka or Sona or Taric.
It seems like Xin Zhao might be a good pick for that role, or possibly Jarvan?

I almost never duo lane anymore.
Jarvan is grand in that role - he can grab a few creep kills easily enough and as long as you can get to your philo and hog you’re going to be just fine for tanky item buying as required.

Alistair, Mundo, Galio, Cho, Garen, Gragas, Heimer, Jarvan, Kayle, Leona (for a certain value of do work), Maokai, Morde, Morgana, Poppy, Singed, Sion, Yorick.

Why not Zilean? Those bombs hurt early on and then you can go into more of a support role after laning is over.
I saw a ridiculous roaming Zilean a long time ago who would fly between lanes, show up, drop a slow and a double-bomb and totally mess the other team up.
Edit: Shen too. I saw a Shen go like 10-0 one game building zero damage. I couldn’t understand how - there would be three people wailing on someone and he’d get the kill. His Q does decent damage but not that great.
