Honestly, some of the recommended items are trash. Ashe’s, however, is largely fine, if out of order (Last Whisper is too early). Get two Doran’s Blades before you upgrade your boots; Doran’s items are the most bang for your buck, and that will give you a nice edge in laning which you’ll need.

However, other champions have much, much worse recommended items lists. YMMV.

I think she’s a blast, but he’s right that there is so much more clicking than most other similar styled characters.

To get a decent big/killing attack off with Riven, you’ve got to do something like Q chasehitwithbasic q chasehitwithbasic q, or just say fuck it and go qqq. Maybe you stun with the W (although the stun duration is extremely short and you have to stop to cast it, which as a practical matter means for chases or escapes it’s fairly useless). The E damage shield is nice, but the dash dashes you like 2 millimeters, again, making it useless for chasing or escapes. The Ult is also nice, but it has a significant casting delay and slow projectiles, I’ve seen many enemies outrun it.

If you do everything in the right order, you can do a ton of damage, but the amount of clicking and repositioning and timing and hoping nothing goes wrong…

You can’t even really take advantage of her passive without concentrating on getting the Q timing right for the entire game. Like I said, exhausting. I want to like her (she’s one of the few female Riot characters whose base skin doesn’t make her look like a stripper), but enh.

I consider Doran’s blade very, very situational for Ashe. Don’t start with one if you think you’ll need something else more.

Thanks all for the hand holding. 3 straight bot game victories in the bag. The last 11/3/6. I think I’ll be ready for peeplez tomorrow.

Yeah, sorry. I bought mine in a store as well (at Target) - it was the “Collector’s Pack,” but it doesn’t look like it is available anymore.

The ones you can buy online from the Riot client are a bit more expensive it seems (the one at Target was $20). The two bundles that are any good are the Digital Collector’s Pack and the Champion’s Bundle. Each has 20 champions for about $27-30.

Bastards priced the two packs put together at 7,310. With $50 you get 7,200. That’s like cheating or something. Why did they have to go and think that through and all?

I wouldn’t buy the champ packs yet… If you get to level 30 and you want to do ranked play, then maybe think about the champ pack, because you will actually have to start thinking about team comp and you will need some depth in your roster to be a team player. But until then you can literally play anyone you want in the 1->30 normal queue progression, it is totally irrelevant. Like someone said earlier, the 450 IP champs are all viable and you can easily spend your whole 1->30 journey just mastering them without even dipping into the free rotation.

I picked up the champ pack early on, it’s nice because when people say “you should play a <x> type hero” you have one ready to go. If you think you’re going to play the game for a while you might as well, it was like $30 which is half of a normal game’s cost.

I find he does ok anywhere. At bot he can chain stun with your support, harass with q all day, and seriously traumatize people. Solo he obviously has trouble making plays on his own, but his Q harass makes your lane very appealing for ganks so long as you aren’t fighting someone that can keep you pushed behind your caster line whilst they farm from theirs. If this is the case (it is for me against malz/urgot/brand/anivia) just stay at tower and farm with Q. Teleport is mandatory at mid because you will never take lane control against the newer longer range guys and the tower hits you’ll take during b will finish you. I find laning to be very tedious with him, but stable. Farm with Q. Farm with Q. Farm with Q. If you don’t feed, get relative lane parity, and manage to pick up blue at 20 min, you are the mid game carry.

At lower ELO, you can do very well harassing with Ryze and make kills with spectacular ease. Once I got good with Ryze, I went on a vengeful doomwreaking win streak (at spectacularly low ELO, I’m sure) until I started playing other champs because I was tired of just playing Ryze all the time.

He has the added bonus of ending up as one of the tougher casters in midgame because his DPSing core is all items that also give you armor, HP, and/or magic resist.

I disagree… There will never come a time from 1->30 when a 450IP champ won’t do in any situation. I think it’s really easy for a new player to be overwhelmed by the huge variety of champs and try to get some control by owning some of them… I think that’s the wrong strategy, because it’s not going to make you more knowledgeable or a better player and if someone rages that “OMFG fag we would have won if you picked Singed” they are stupid liars.

I don’t mean so you can randomly pick heroes all the time. I mean when you ask us “what’s a good hero that does x, y, z?” we can tell you some names and you’ll have one ready to go.

EDIT: it also lets you play in any 5v5 qt3 matches we set up on the spur of the moment in mumble. Not that we’ve had a srs one in ages.

So last night we had all of the enemy inhibitors down and then proceeded to lose the game. So sad. Yes we know this is the sort of thing that doesn’t happen at high elo. Anyway I kept on thinking afterwards about all of the missed opportunities we had to back door and the last mistake we made.

Tryn is so ANNOYING. I was with Galio in top as Ryze facing Tryn and we were dominating in the laning phase - except stupid ass Galio pushed the lane so hard Tryn got hits at the tower - all he had to do was just last hit with me and trynd would have been behind on xp and gold…

And Tryn went on to go 17/x/x and pretty much won the game - despite us having Veigar, Galio, Irelia and myself available to stun. Somehow we never managed to kill them - I suspect people were all wailing on tryn until he ulted, and then continued to try and kill him. I couldn’t really keep up - I was dropping a prison on Tryn, then moving to Kat and then back to prison Tryn (or trying) but we got wiped, lol.

Yay, 30. Got it playing as Garen, who I had never played before this week but I’m liking right now. I like him more when I’m playing more of an off-tank role, though. Being the main tank as Garen requires more skill than I have with him at the moment.

Anyway, time for some ranked games! Oh, snap. Um, time to play another hundred games for IP points so I can buy runes!

Be a gent and buy runes before playing ranked. They make a difference.

Yeah, I’ve got a few sets already but I need a couple more. Thanks for assuming I’m clueless, though :P

bought Yorick, had fun. I’m really liking him. Seems several ways to build him and do ok as well.

I can’t tell if my Champ is sometimes auto-switching to another minion after taking one out or not. It seems like sometimes he/she does and sometimes not.
