It was basically a response to the shift towards AoE teams. Tanky DPS shined because they could survive the AoE where others could not. Riot responded to this metagame trend by nerfing the shit out of AoE, which in turn led to tanky DPS being too strong instead. So people responded by playing more ranged characters and using red buff/high movespeed to kite the slow DPS around the field (something that moderately worked and started the whole ghost/flash thing). Riot responded by nerfing both of them.
And people wonder why I get so pissed off when I go on about Riot not knowing what the fuck they are doing.

Look at what they’ve done with the last two patches, they’re slowly trying to eliminate jungling a change I’m not overly in favor of. I realize that the advantage a team with a jungler had over one that didn’t was pretty significant and for less experienced players coping with a roaming ganker was troubling, but it also makes the boring early game more interesting. Riot seems to want to go back to 25 minute laning phases, where things don’t get interesting until a tower is gone.

Warwick is tough because of lifesteal, but he’s not very tanky. If he gets focused, he’ll melt almost instantly like any squishy.
That’s why any WW worth his salt builds tanky once he finishes Madrads, fitting a Cleaver in when he can.
No. It’s a good reason to go with a GA, but WW needs more damage. Building a tank warwick is pointless when there are better tanks.

That applies mostly to the US scene. The EU scene, last I remember, was still really gank-heavy with an emphasis on anti-jungling. Although how the discovery of Locket Gragas fits into that is anyone’s idea (he’s unkillable with it, or was).
Malz was, if I remember rightly, a South Korean team discovery.
Anyway, Riot balance for the US game which is odd 'cause the EU scene is arguable more competitive.
All WW needs is a Bloodrazor, Starks and a Cleaver. That’s it. That gives you two item slots to build tanky, I’m fond of grabbing a Banshee’s Veil myself but I’ve seen Warmogs/Thornmail work well (basically turns him into an unbeatable anti-carry).
And Bunny there is never a good reason to get GA.
I don’t agree at all. GA or BV are both good choices for Warwick. Sometimes I go with Thornmail, but it depends on who you’re fighting. Spirit Visage is also a good choice because it’s cheap and it will boost his passive and give a a bit of magic resist and CDR.

For less gold you can build Blood Razor, MPen boots, and Malady and one shot virtually every carry in the game with your ult. Obviously Black Cleaver brings more damage to the table, but it takes longer to build.
I pretty much always end up building Banshee’s on WW, gotta protect yourself against all that CC.
I don’t include WW in the tanky DPS group, he’s not inherently tanky like Xin, Garen, Nasus, Sion, and Olaf. He’s really more like say, Kassadin than those guys. He doesn’t want to stand in the middle of a fight, but instead pop in kill a carry and then kite around hitting people with Q where he can.
Bunny the GA change has turned it into a completely worthless item, hence my comment about it never worth getting. BV obviously is a good item, as it is with any character that has a channeled ulti. The point is you don’t need damage past a certain point.
Blue I haven’t played WW for months and months and completely forgot about the Malady change. With the recent BC change I’d probably agree with you about grabbing Malady instead.

Yeah. WW isn’t inherently tankier than any other melee dps. You don’t even start getting tanky until after madred’s and that can be a while. His itemization lets him end up tanky but I’ve never felt him play anywhere near as tough as morde, garen, etc.

that’s the point, almost every tanky character dies if they get focus, that’s why they build tanking item.
after madred, warwick with spirit visage + banshee veil + randuin/aegis becomes extremely tough to kill. he have great damage output with the % max health + insane lifesteal. I go as far as saying you do not need anymore attack speed item other than madred simply because his W already give him 80% attack speed when used.
Uh, no. That’s the point of a tank, to hopefuly get focused instead of the squishies and take the punishment while squishies maneuver and do the deeps. They have high health and base resists… Warwick has neither of those.
But after you’ve spent all that money on spirit visage/banshee veil and randuin/aegis, you have no base damage aside from madreds and you can’t kill squishies fast enough.

here is the difference I don’t play WW as an assassin, because assassin type are useless in current metagame, they are squishy and they die.
if you want to play an effective carry nowadays, you need to be extremely tanky and yet put out enough dps that can’t be heal through(% of their health is the best). that’s why character like Mundo and Warwick are fucking scary at mid to late game, because you can’t kill them, you can’t ignore them, you can’t outrun them, exhaust doesn’t work simply because a lot of their damage comes from their skills.

WW naturally gain more armor per level as well magic resist than “tank” like malphite or garen.
I don’t play Warwick with the intention of carrying… If I wanted to carry, I’d pick someone else. Warwick is best as an assassin/disabler/chaser. Also he’s still the best jungler in the game, which I hold is still important even with Dragon’s reduced usefulness.
Mundo as a carry is ridiculous… Ridiculous haha, not ridiculous omg. Yeah, it’s nice that he can’t be killed, but the dude does no damage so people just go around him.
Garen has more resists thanks to Courage’s passive (not to mention the active which is 30% damage reduction!). Malphite also has a 10% True Damage shield. You kinda know this stuff, I don’t know why I’m explaining this… but calling WW an effective tank is just bizarre.
