Here I feel, sir, that you have gone a bridge too far.
Baron. Quickly now, I haver little patience for your trivialities.
I dunno, I feel like I can be effective early with few items on sivir; more effective than Trist. Certainly I can farm better, which means I can potentially be more effective in early skirmishes with enemy champs.
I’m not saying Sivir isn’t item dependant; she clearly is. But she gets a better damage boost from BB than Trist does from anything IMO. A 2 point BB can really make someone’s life miserable. That’s level 3. Trist just can’t do that.
Technically anyone can be a carry. Shen’s just one of the worst ones.
I think at lower levels it’s not uncommon to see a character with good CC rack up kills like that. Lower level players haven’t gotten used to dealing with CC. I’m not sure why other people were surprised Tom had a good kill score with Shen. I haven’t looked at his itemization - maybe he built shen to do damage and not tanky enough - but even tanky CC can wreck a lowbie game in a unique way.
Note that I don’t include Rammus in the “good CC” category, because his CC is in a class of its own.
Gangplank - someone talk to me about Gangplank builds. Besides IE and maybe a Phantom Dancer late game. And building Avarace blades early to mid as filler. Should I use some crit chance runes? Am I going to have to start speccing more for offense (I’ve been running 1/18/11 because I got tired of changing masteries. But I’m not as enamored with the +health from defense as I used to be so I may be rearranging again).

I don’t think crit chance runes are important for GP. Everything you build will have enough crit. Get enough mana regen to never stop parlaying, then get armor pen. I’d also suggest movement speed runes since you are going to do a lot of kiting with him.
My current “carry” rune page is move speed quints (can’t stop using them. I think I’m addicted), armor pen reds, mp/5 per level blues and yellows. GP build is something like q, w, e, q, q, r, q, q then r>w>e. I’ve been forced to mid in my two games so I didn’t take e first for denail (may switch that up).
Was starting with meki too (and 2 red pots), which means mana isn’t an issue (even accounting for scaling mp/5s versus flats). From there it’s just crit items of various sorts? Is executioner’s calling worth looking into (everyone always makes fun of it)?
Also, I read what I think is an old guide on Leagecraft that said Tiamat + Parley was awesome. Is that still something to consider?

I usually get 2-3 avarice blades and then an infinity edge. After infinity edge I make a ghost blade from one of the avarice blades, and from there I get phantom dancers for movement speed. I play him a lot like Yi. Do not be near your team when the teamfight starts. Give it a second or two and come on when their team has already committed to attacking one of your teammates. If GP is left alone in melee with 80%-90% crit, he will kill everything.

EDIT: I don’t know much about tiamats on him. Meki is okay, but you won’t need to turn it into anything. I could almost go for doran’s so you get the health and a bit of AP to help with your self-heal if you need it.
EDIT EDIT: Sorry, that wasn’t an edit I guess.
Well I intended turn meki into a chalice both games but in the first I went manamune because I forgot and made a tear (old habit). Doran’s ring sounds like a good idea.
Do you get your avarace blades before the Best Friend sword? Play it by ear?

It depends when you have to back. If you can get your BF sword first time back, do it. If you can’t, just get your avarice blades. Also, I am of the opinion that chalice is a bad item in general. I would never get it on any hero. If you need mana that bad, just get manamune or buy a sheen or something. There are better ways to spend a slot in your inventory.
edit: On second thought, manamune is probably too much. You could buy a sapphire crystal and plan on making it into a banshee’s veil later. If you aren’t a AP carry like veigar/anivia or something, your character should really get a banshee’s veil at some point in the game. It is one of the best survival items. Health and a spell block!
Been on a bad run of games lately but had a nice turn around in solo ranked last night though. Game started with me having ban power, and two people on the team calling for Shaco to be banned, so what the hell right? I believe in banning the guys the team has trouble with more than the hive mind autobans anyways. But then the game starts and they are all asking why I banned Shaco? One of the guys who called for it replied with basically “I wasn’t serious.” Yeah well that’s tough to tell in chat now isn’t it?
So on to the game.
We got a non-jungle Olaf who is feeding. He finally rage quits after we refuse to surrender, even though we are winning on towers if not kills. He’s something like 1/8/2. So the game turns into a 5v4, but we forge on and we are actually winning the team fights, which isn’t shocking as the other team was all magic with the exception of a Pantheon, so myself and the other tanky guy have been stacking MR/Health. Game ends with us pushing straight down mid, the Olaf who quit 15 minutes earlier still has the most deaths on our team.
This never ceases to amaze me. I lost a game this morning where we were down 30-33 in kills.
Towers? 1-I don’t even know how many. I think we had 1 tower left standing at the end but it might have been 2, with the middle tower bot still up). And we won several team fights (I usually died in them as plank - committing too quickly no doubt), coming out with a 1 or sometimes 2 man advantage.
Couldn’t get anyone to push to save my life. We’d win a fight, chase a champ, and then retreat to our side of the battlefield. Twice I was left to defend towers solo against 3+ champs.
What have they done to my beloved Heimer, this “turret stock” is a Corki shenanigan, bloody idiots!
Anyway, tried Sivir last night and was surprised with how well I played her… until our team decided to start splitting up and continuously feed the enemy Vlad who picked them off one by one assisted by a increasingly powerful Trynd.
Around the 40m mark I had pushed all lanes up to their base and was backdooring them when our Akali starts trash talking about me in /all on how I don’t participate in team fights and insist on pushing towers… yeah… and not happy with that it starts trolling me about my score (at that time it was 3/4/19) and how I’m useless and should uninstall. 8 more minutes or so and our kills differential was 30-49 or so and we ended surrendering in a hail of shit talk from our Akali.
Ah LoL… it never changes. :/

Yeah, I don’t play heimer anymore. He doesn’t do nearly as well in lane because his turrets are weaker. If you can’t farm, he is weaksauce :P
Although I’ve definitely been in games where people are stubborn and refuse to surrender even though the game is clearly lost, the opposite seems to be true far more often with people giving up on a game that is very winnable. I remember this happening in one game where we had only lost a single tower I think and the kills were essentially tied and out of nowhere a surrender vote goes up and I’m thinking “yeah right, why would we surrender?” and then stared shocked as everyone but me voted yes.
Gangplank is easy. Always start with E and deny every time it’s on CD, it’s the whole point in taking a GP anyway. It’s especially good in a solo lane as their solo is now only getting 80% of the xp that you are and will be put behind.
Item wise, start with a sapphire crystal and 2 health pots. Build Manamune asap while not forgetting boots, then build the CDR boots. That’s core on any GP, Manamune was practically invented for this champion, and from there you have 2 choices depending on your mastery setup. You can go Tankplank with 21/9/0 or you can go Carryplank with 21/9/0 (the 9 in defense being both resistences and SoS).
Carryplank picks up and Avarice Blade or 2 for an eventual Ghostblade followed by an IE and then a defensive item of your choice (much like any other carry). Tankplank builds a BV and a GA straight away, swinging back for more damage later if needed.

The only reason to start with sapphire crystal is to be able to harass very hard early game. If he wants to stay in lane longer and farm, or even get first blood, doran’s is better. The only heroes I would consider getting a sapphire crystal on early are maybe zilean and malphite.
I’m glad Heimer players finally have to learn how to last hit :P
I also think he’s far better in a teamfight now then he was before.

What do you mean learn?! Have you ever tried last hitting with two extra minions through you off? :) Learning to last hit with two turrets firing randomly is a whole new skill in itself.

I do meki with blitz because I don’t have any mana regen runes when I take him, just armor pen + magic resist (40 at level 18). A case could be made to do sapphire crystal since it could amount to a hundred or two hundred more health points to his passive, but meki lets me get more pulls in the long run if I stay in lane (which I usually don’t since I always die early or get first blood :P )
You get the crystal so you can keep denying. It also gives you a very good amount of health regen with Strength of Spirit, an amazing mastery a lot of people overlook. It’s why you start with the crystal rather then the Meki.
