I ran Philostone on Alistar a couple nights ago (and later built it into Shurelyas) and it absolutely made a huge early game difference compared to other builds I’d tried with him.
I’ve been doing mostly cloth armor plus potions starts on melee champs since the Doran’s changes and meki plus a potion for AP champs.
I’ve played so little of ranged champs since the changes that I’m not sure the best start. I’ve seen regrowth and fairie charm on high elo streams, as well as cloth armor and boots. I don’t really like cloth armor on Ashe or MF though so I’d probably be more inclined to go shield or boots.
Alistar is one of my favourite champions to go the Boots, 2 and 1 pot start. Allows you so much mobility and lets you play as aggressively as possible, between killing in your own lane and roaming around the map.
I’m also not quite sure what to start my ranged carries with anymore. Boots seems like an obvious choice for someone like Ashe or MF but for others it’s a lot harder to call.
Starting equipment . . .
Speaking of starting equipment, I’ve been playing Mundo lately - going with a very tanky build.
Interestingly enough, I tend to die mostly in the earliest part of the game - before my ult at level 6 keeps me full health most of the time. I also tend to not go back to shop, leaving me with only my starting item.
I’ve had the most success with Doran’s shield - but any advice appreciated.
Late game is ridiculous - tower diving, running from all 5 enemies, essentially dominating and changing the game. But I still occasionally have the rough early game.

22 hp per 5, 10 mp5, yes I get regrowth pendant then philosopher stone PUREEEEELY for 10 mp5…
If you ran Strength of Spirit you wouldn’t have to waste that early gold in game on Hp regen. It lets you stay in lane just fine. There are good masteries in the other trees aswell you know.
But this whole thing was about mana potions, which I wholeheartedly endorse. Not on every champion certainly but they are far from the useless item you seem to think they are.
You may think that 40 gold for 100 mana is a good trade, I do not. I think that much like your opinion that a sapphire crystal is the best of all starting items for Gangplank because with strength of spirit it gives 2hp/5, we will just have to agree to disagree.
Last night they deactivated unranked games on 5v5 for some reason. So I played 3v3. We were down 31 kills to 17 but we won anyway.

l0lh3h3 - why not, say, regrowth if you aren’t going to be facing phys dps in your lane?
We’ve been having crazy games lately. Last night we were seriously loosing on fights and team fights - the whole team bar one wanted to surrender (including me). One player said lets wait till the next team fight, next one we won and the next one and the next one and they surrendered :)

In addition to half the regen the regrowth allows, the shield also grants additional health. As well, even if you aren’t facing AD, at low levels caster auto-attacks matter, and so do minions–don’t tell me you’ve never opened your death recap and seen hundreds of damage from minions.
Yeah, I bet many of the times when a team surrenders they could have gone on to win.
That’s down to team motivation - as important as some of the strategy we see listed here :)
Yeah, Karashur (think it was him) was our “captain” and he managed to coordinate our attacks and motivate us (well, minus the random Jax who was just roaming and randomly jumping towards a very beefy Rammus and/or mord. /facepalm ).
The one thing I’ve always hated about full random games is that most of the time, unless you rack up massive kills, people will not value your support role; case in mind, playing as AP/Tank Gragas I was initiating, splitting the enemy team, harassing at towers and zoning them so they could be side ganked, etc. The result was that my score was at 4/6/29 or something like that and still I had a ridiculously poor Garen (3/3/4) trolling me how I “suck at the game, uninstall and go play tetris”. We won the game and at the end chat the enemy team congratulated me on my performance, to the dismay and further trolling (“omfg, he was useless!trolololol!”) of the idiotgaren.
Really, that’s why dota-like games are considered an hostile environment unless you get to play with friendly chaps or with your friends.
No question I would not be playing this game now without the community we have on both the US and EU - albeit I seldom hit the time zones of the US unfortunately.
After a few games with Irelia I don’t think I like her. I realize she’s the new FOTM and supposedly OP. Really what it comes down to is on the melee champs I prefer the CC abilities that are set to proc on next attack v. being
a targetable one like Irelia’s. It just doesn’t flow as well for me and it can’t be prepped before using another skill.
On the flip side I think I’m taking a liking to Alistair who may be I think
one of the more underrated champs out there. He also has the upside of never getting banned in ranked
as opposed to Malph, Amumu, Rammus and Shen.

US login server went down. It’s interesting though that in about 10-20 mins, about 9000+ are logging into the game at 11pm est.

Hold shift instead of targeting?
On-next-hit abilities are actually pretty rare, so that’s a very unfortunate judgment of gameplay for you.
This is why I am working on my Mundo
