Good choices but not godly: Malzahar, Lux, Karthus, Swain, Morg and possibly the new Ryze
All the others are basically counter picks or do the same job as one of the above but do it worse.

Also, I would not consider Sion a caster.
I would have to assume you’re building him in the inferior for all but the 60+ minute game AD style? AP sion is a caster with 2 spells, and as far as I can tell those two are enough to run down whoever he needs to. 2 second stun that has an AP ratio of 1:1, plus a huge shield with AOE damage with another 1:1 AP ratio is plenty of “casting”. Throw in a lichbane after your deathcap so you can wack someone for an extra 500+ damage in between spells and you’re good.
What class of character is he to you?
Well since he asked me for a list of the best casters in the game I’d be a bit worried if it weren’t ;)
Also I’m a bit confused about why you don’t think Sion is a caster? AP Sion is one of the most powerful casters in the entire game, and arguably the best pub stomper (because of how hard he snowballs). If someone is going to ask me for a list of the best AP champions in the game he is certainly going to be in it.
Barring Veiger he has the highest burst damage of any character in the game.
I don’t know but there’s a few characters that can be built AP that I’d be hard pressed to call a caster. Alistar has two damage abilities that have a 1:1 AP damage ratio, one an AoE knock up as well, and an AoE heal. I wouldn’t call him a caster though would you? Is AP Akali a caster?
Akali is more of anti carry in my eyes. She does need to be built like a caster though, but more hybrid than just pure AP.
Again, while you make somewhat of a point there are subtle differences. Alistar’s two skills have low base damage and are on extremely high cooldowns. Sion’s skills however have caster length cooldowns (his stun is ridiculously short at max level) aswell as high base damage. He also relies on going into the fight bursting a single target and then getting out, much like all the other casters. In addition AP Sion has been regarded as one of the most powerful champions in the game for a long time and is the normal build.
I simply fail to see how you could not include him on a list of powerful AP champions.
Also, Akali is not really a caster. She is an Assassin/Anti-carry. I also wouldn’t rate her as a top pick. She is a very good counter pick however, but that’s why she wasn’t listed (as I didn’t list much champs which have only situational value)
To me there is a difference between caster and AP champion. I just think of it along the lines of a new player coming to the game and saying they tend to like to play mages in MMOs and games like Diablo. Sure you are ultimately buying the same items but I’m not sure I would ever recommend Sion to someone who qualified things that way. Yes he’s a great AP champ, I’m just not sold on calling him a caster as to me that implies something different.

Also, what is this sudden love of Zilean I see around? I know his ult was always good but what, people suddenly appreciate how effective it is or did it get massively buffed or what?
AoE got nerfed pretty bad, so having someone to revive you once most of their single target stuff is really nasty now. He’s basically to melee champions what Janna is to Ranged AD.
The one’s I watch are Guardsman Bob (I don’t like the other solomid casters, although Regi can be good to watch with the sound off), TreeEskimo and Roku. Tree is incredibly good to watch as he offers some of the best commentary on his games that I’ve ever managed to find and has a pretty big/well organised archive to boot :)
Apparently people have only just realized a good Zilean Ult will win you games.
I see your point Forge, but I’ve always found the idea of a melee caster to be pretty unique and fun. Range should not equal caster in my book.
I don’t think it’s that people suddenly realized, more so that high elo games became more accessible to view/learn from for a lot of people.

Sion’s a one trick pony. I wouldn’t actually recommend him to someone that is thinking of “casters” in the traditional sense, because he doesn’t play like one. It’s not like Ryze where you have 3 unique spells and running into the fray isn’t what you want to do at all.

Zilean can harass lanes really easy with his bombs, he’s one of the three characters I splurged and got with my IP. Singed and Galio were the other two, what can I say, I seem to gravitate to Tanky and Support characters

You think Anivia is still that high after the recent nerfs? Also I’ve never noticed many Vlad players on high Elo streams (and have never seen him in a tournament). Obviously he’s a great pub stomper but I wonder why he’s so unattractive otherwise.
