had a couple nice games with anivia yesterday, with tals, digby, and others. I really really really like her, and it’s awesome to actually see how she plays when things go right, rather than the usual scrabling to recover after sucking too much

Oh wait… that was you? I had no idea, honestly, else I would have sweared like a sailor in portuguese. :)

haha yeah I’m grim

What Elo is considered ‘low’ ? What’s high?

And what are you guys at?

Low is anything below 1000, High would be anything over 1500. Everything in between is pretty average because you start at 1200.

Hah. I was just listening to TreeEskimo and he called 1900 “low elo”.

Then again, I’m not even 30 yet. My elo is probably like -200

Well I mean technically 1800+ is what you have to be to truely be considered a “high elo” player (most of the professionals are above 2000). But 1500+ represents the top 10% of the player base.

Low ELO is a fucked up place too. I’m sub 1000 in solo right now and I really don’t belong there. The problem with low elo is it’s such a crapshoot as to what you are going to get on your team. The issue then is that you need to be really good to get out of it as you need to be able to single handedly carry shitty teams which is a bit beyond my skill set. The most annoying thing is I’ll win one lose one and end up net negative, so I’m not even breaking even. Really you pretty much do need to duo the solo queue early on to ensure yourself at least one decent other player on your team. That would be my advice to anyone starting solo ranked, bring a partner, because once you slip down it’s tough to get out.

I wish I could see my normal ELO because I don’t see half the stupid shit I see in solo ranked in my normal games.

Imo, they should weight everyone’s normal elo when placing them first time in ranked rather then start everyone at 1200.

They also need to enforce a far more strict leaver system if the elo system is ever going to come close to working. Losing anywhere from 10-25 odd elo because someone on your team left is the main problem with the game right now.

Haha, while I consider myself a good player (with a very good knowledge of the game) I’m nowhere near as good as those guys :)

But then, I don’t play 8 or more hours a day either ;)

wait, you weren’t joking? there’s people playing this for a living?

Well, I know that certain e-sports, in a certain level of play, prize-wise are enough to allow you to play for a living; consider the multi-million dollar Korean SC scene with it’s televised broadcasts and large sponsored teams.

That said, it’s a very small bracket, a niche area even, and as far as I know LoL has no real representation at that level. The National ESL is a great stepping stone but until you start seeing very large prizes you won’t have “professional” players, not in the same sense as you have professional football or rugby players.

Yes but also there are a few major teams that have enough sponsorship that leave you living decently enough while you play the game. Your equipment and travel expenses would be paid for, for instance and then prize money can be very decent. You’ll most certainly need a real job aswell but considering no-one playing these games are over 30, it’s not that much of an inconvenience to keep a part time job up.

Nothing in the league of Korean Starcraft teams (who are literally housed, fed and afaik given retirement packages like any professional sportsman) or even Heroes of Newerth (prize wise, I think there was a $100,000 pool for a tourney there a month ago) but certainly enough for these guys to spend a substantial amount of their time playing this game.

I’m not sure you can term what HotShotGG is doing “living” but playing LoL is pretty much his life.

I pulled myself from 970 Elo to 1140 Elo in about a week playing by myself and playing nothing but WW. 1100 to 1200 is a lot harder of a jump to make because you get paired with people who are brand new to ranked. I actually found games from 1000 to 1100 Elo to be more competitive/balanced than those from 1100-1200.

I like these ideas. I definitely think first time to ranked players are a pretty big problem. I will say that I notice fewer leavers/disconnects when I play during “Prime Time” (about 5pm PST to 9pm PST). Nothing against all our awesome non NA players, but I have noticed that when I play later/earlier where most of my teammates are European/South American that’s when I start getting the really bizarre behavior.

Even still I’m not in favor of region locked servers, but maybe match making bonuses for similar pings or something.

that’s why I told you to stop playing ranked blue, you should play normal games with me, then I promise we do some duo queue :)

I’m kinda in the “ELO hell is a scapegoat for people who think they’re better than they are” camp.

I played zero ranked games last night!

I think I’m done playing ranked with the guy I normally duo with. The guy just rages too much. Last match we played together I was jungle amumu and he was Sion, and at one point I took blue buff even though he was asking for it. The rest of the team said I should have it at that moment and he totally just lost it. He died a little later in the enemy base after a stupid (by the whole team) tower dive. He claimed that if he’d had blue buff he would’ve got the last two kills. From that point on we pretty much lost because he was raging and the rest of the team went against him.

At that moment I just took a step back and said, why? Why do I play with this guy? The whole point of duo queueing is to remove the randomness of ranked, but so many times he exhibits that same behavior and causes our teams to fall apart. Gotta find someone more level headed or something.

There is an element of truth to this certainly. But I do think that there are some real bad players out there and when you hit the sub 4 digit Elo it becomes even more noticeable.

Gotta find someone more level headed or something.

do you want me to play duo ranked with you?? you can stop hinting you know…

You should be like “Gotta find someone more idris-like or something”…

Honestly I was thinking about quitting once I got back to 1200. We’ll see how it goes.
