It’s Magic Damage.
DragonPup, try build a Cata first item then Sorc Shoes into Sunfire Cape. You need defensive masteries to support Sapphire first item though.
Whats a cata? I just started playing so a lot of these abbreviations are lost on me. My runes are set up as magic pen, armor and magic resist.

Welcome to the world of the tank. You will find that there are many varied item builds for the role of BAHHHHHH HAHAHAHAHAHA

Speaking of Thornmail, is the damage it returns 30% of the attacker’s base damage (or crit, I guess) or 30% of damage that makes it past my armor?

Legions of nerds have already tested and come up with answers to your puny questions, mx.

Jesus. I was thinking there was no way it was pre-armor damage. Good to know.
Yeah I had an Ashe kill herself on my Nocturne while I was attacking an inhib the other day, it was quite awesome.

Thornmail is kind of a dicey proposition sometimes. Since it’s magic damage, it’s reduced by MR, which anyone competent will probably have some of. It can help tip the scales of close fights in the other direction though. I’ve bought Thornmail but it may be worth asking yourself if you’d be better off with Randuin’s. If you’re facing a really autoattacker-heavy enemy team and you’re stacking armor in response, I could see it, but that almost never happens.
It is really satisfying watching someone kill themselves though. I once had an enemy Garen kill himself on my Defensive Ball Curl as Rammus while he was chasing me.
Relative stats:
Thornmail (2000g):
+100 armor
Passive: Return 30% of autoattack damage taken (pre-armor) as magic damage.
Randuin’s Omen (2925g):
+300 health
+80 armor
+25 HP/6
+5% CDR
Passive: 20% chance on hit to slow attacker’s movespeed and aspd by 35% of 3 seconds.
Active (60sec CD): Reduce movespeed and aspd of everyone around you by 35% for 2 seconds, plus a bit of time based on their armor and MR.
Randuin’s is admittedly more expensive, and it’s a little less armor, but it’s also a good chunk of health, some CDR, affects people who are attacking teammates as well as you, and helps to prevent escapes. There’s also the HP/5, although by the time you have Randuin’s HP/5 is a nearly irrelevant stat.

No, Thornmail is great and you’re terrible. Maybe if they only have one AD character. But still.

This is quite an argument you have here. Thornmail is a counterpick item only.

I don’t need to make an argument, because I’m not terrible.
Most games we do we only have one AD person…

Yes, well, your elo is substantially higher than the US qt3 group’s :p

EU has some terribad fucking players, wow. Lost a bot game.
Though the bots that were picked by Riot are a ridiculous combination of CC and support/healing that gets freed gold to build very tanky very early. I guess they anticipate that the players are supposed to farm them for kills, but if the game isn’t won in 30 minutes then it actually becomes a supreme pain in the ass just to kill anyone if your team is full of fucking idiots who have never heard of Executioner’s Calling.
So there’s been a few times now where I’ve been in ranked champ select and looking at the enemy team and our team and thinking “man we are fucked” and someone on their team dodges!
Do bots get free gold in co-op?
Is Nasus a bit of a situational tank? I guess Rammus and Malphite (and… ?) are always great to have on a team, but Nasus?
I really should play ranked, in some ways it might be easier being able to counter-pick than choosing somewhat randomly. Eg, taking Akali and discovering you are facing a tank-heavy team can make you a sad panda.
Had to solo top as Akali against Maphite who was also solo-topping last night and got WTF pwn’d. I switched out with a Taric, who did worse, which made me feel better at least.
And damn it, I might just buy the damn rune page bundle. I hate being restricted in what I can chose for a fight. Man, Riot earns some cash off me!

I highly recommend never using the word tank to describe anyone in League of Legends because it is a meaningless term. You can build Nasus to be survivable – in fact, you should – but there is no way you can make people attack you except by doing a shitload of damage, and if that’s your criterion, Miss Fortune is a tank.
Most people using the term in a League of Legends context mean someone who is tough to kill and has strong initiation. Sometimes this means they have a way to draw fire, but not always – Malphite does not, for example.
The most obvious other champions who fit this mold are Shen, who has a low-cooldown dash taunt, and Galio, who has an AOE taunt with a damaging explosion at the end.
We’ve probably been over this a bunch of times in this thread.
