Last night I was Trist, mid lane, vs Ryze. Damn he is a annoying. The stun is frustrating but so is the fact that in two very early battles I had him at 5%, whereas I was dead.

That player was very good and went on to dominate for his team (although we won the map) and left me pondering counters.

In that game I built Trist a bit odd. I got the 3 boots, a selection or armor and magic defense and then finished Ghostblade before moving back towards crit items later in the game.

I decided to tank a bit as damn Ryze kept wtfpwning me and no one else was. I was usually doing enough damage to the others, or had friends around, so the only “challenge” on the board was Ryze.

I couldn’t help but think that I could have found some awesome counter to his magic, but I never cracked it before it became irrelevant.

So, what do you do when faced with a feeding magic blaster guy like Ryze?

P.S. I love the look/style of the sad mummy. Might have to try him next. Hehe.

Earlier this year if you didn’t rush a banshee’s veil when facing Ryze he’d probably have 20 Mejai’s stacks by the 20 minute mark. Nowadays you don’t really have to rush one, but getting one against him at some point is good.

If you’re getting owned by a magic-using carry you should definitely make a concerted effort to pick up a magic resist item. Banshee’s veil is always good - void staff (is that the one that builds off of the null cloak?) and force of nature can be decent on certain characters, though probably not Trist.

I’m a bit worried though, because I only have a vague idea what skills most other champions have, and for a lot of them I don’t really know who’s a carry and who’s a tank. Did you guys make a concerted effort to play every character a bunch and read up on their moves and roles? I want to keep playing and having fun, but memorizing all that stuff sounds like a lot of work. Maybe the unranked games stay pretty casual?

You don’t really have to read up on each character that much - just keep playing the game, trying out the free characters each week, and reading up on some character-specific and general strategy for characters you’re interested, and that should be more than enough to get by. Eventually you will need a general understanding of everyone’s moves and what type of damage they do, but you don’t really need to worry about that too much yet.

If I could go back in time and give myself LoL advice, here’s what I would say:

Play very cautiously at all times. If you die before level 6, you probably made a big mistake.
Don’t focus on kills, focus on turrets. Sometimes teams will dominate in kill totals but still lose the game because they failed to push turrets.
Use wards. Every trip back to the base, buy at least two of the cheap ones (the expensive ones are only for invisible characters). Learning how/where to place wards makes a huge difference on map awareness. Example: ward the opponent’s golem at the start to setup a gank (I buy the cheap ward, boots, and a health pot when I do this).
Don’t rely on the recommended items. There are many instances where your champ will do much better with different items, find out what they are by reading the strategy threads.
Don’t take the game so seriously, especially the “Normal” matches. It’s not worth getting frustrated - it’s just a game! ;)

Good tips! I have found my biggest struggle is getting the last hits in. I find it easy with Trist (well, she does a great job at farming), but other characters? Man, so hard to get right and it makes such a big difference!

Joe - are there good vids to watch out there to help you learn the pace and style of various characters? For example, I think I am getting quite capable with Tristana in that I understand her pace and about when it is time to unleash, etc, but I was playing <scout guy who fires the wave of energy as his ultimate> and only late in the piece did I realize I should have spammed his Q ability to build up attack speed. I also found him hard to use. I am wondering whether watching experts will tune me in to the champions better.

I’m struggling to find a Tristana specific video, though. You might try watching some of these streams? Dan’s Epik stream is in there, too, and I’ve seen him play Trist vs Hotshot a number of times so you might get lucky.

The biggest help I can give you about last hitting is to work on your mouse control. You should be constantly clicking about 3 feet or so in front of your champ to both keep him moving. This is both to avoid auto-attacking minions and to easier dodge skill shots. If you don’t auto-attack minions, you’ll always have an attack ready to hit a minion once it’s on low life.

Last hitting is an extremely important skill but also difficult to master.
