For me, I liked the original cast more and I think No Mercy is still overall one of the best campaigns. However the additions of the spitter, jockey and charger really changed the infected dynamic around and fixed a lot of holes in the infected offense. I still wouldn’t mind running them in campaign but I think until/if we see them converted for l4d2 there won’t be a lot of people wanting to play vs with them. Especially since we have realism vs in 2.
Yeah, the new infected, and realism vs, change the game (for the better). As much as I miss the original cast, I can’t imagine going back to a versus where you just have hunter/smoker/boomer.
I remember we tried going back- and everyone forgot that the hunter was the main cause of damage back in the day- so hunter pounces were really the only big source of damage. Also pistols were waaay better back then, and were practically the same as the T1 smg.
All in all, I would play L4D1 for the campaigns, but not the versus.

Yeah, after vs IHM I’m in the never again camp.
When does IHM come out for L4d2 anyway?
Hahah, yeah. Even though flaming hunters needed that nerf, it’s funny to look back and realize how limited your options of doing damage are. Of course, there are no melee weapons, so common infected are a little more important.
This stuff all sounds awesome. I mean I don’t really know what you guys are talking about but the jist is enough :)
If notatiger pokes his head in here:
You did well for your first (I thought you said first; I know you emphasized you were inexperienced) time, FWIW. It will take time but you’ll eventually see improvement in your timing. That’s probably the most frustrating thing as a n00b; you don’t know the maps well enough to know spawn points and you often feel like you are flailing around, looking for a place to spawn. . . only to find the survivors have passed you buys by the time you find one. It’ll change. The only way to improve timing/learn the maps is to play, of course.
A couple of things to keep in mind:
-
As spitter, assuming there are no downed survivors, your first priority is to spit where a charger has charger someone. Failing that, where a hunter pounces. Failing there, where a Smoker drags someone. Afer that, it just depends on the situation. Spitter + (charger/hunter/smoker) combos can lead to big damage.
-
I don’t know if this came up with you last night, but be careful when initiating a charge on a target at point blank range. There is some sort of collision detection issue, and often you will just “bounce off” the person. I find it obnoxious that Valve have not fixed it, frankly. Ideally, leave a little room between you and a charge target.
-
If you didn’t figure it out, as a hunter when you prepare to pounce sometimes you need to “aim up” to get more distance. Hunter pounces are an art form I have yet to master.
-
Unfortunately, all of your teammates were playing bad last night. Sometimes it can get confusing when you have multiple people shouting orders at you. Sorry we couldn’t provide a better first time experience. I blame Thorn, and Jab’s hax.

Also about the spitter, one of the key moments to spit is when people are stuck in one spot such as being boomed or recovering from a charge. I’ve seen all 4 survivors taken down by one timed spit when they are stuck.
I actually really enjoyed I hate Mountains both in Campaign and vs, I hope they do a good version for L4D2. Of course it would still be nice if Valve could get the L4D maps out for L4D2, I actually miss Dead Air and Death Toll.
Me too. I love how DT 4 was extra crazy and it was possible to meet 2 tanks and up to 3 witches on it, and I want that but with Ld2’s accouterments. And Dead Air was probably my favorite overall campaign. Also, I miss No Mercy 3 lots.
Thanks! It was my first time in L4D2 vs. and only my third campaign of any type. As a survivor not knowing the maps is brutal; I would turn around to check behind me and then turn back and y’all had already taken a corner. That and not knowing where the infected are likely to strike from made me feel like a dead weight.
Infected was a bit different. The really changed the boomer, didn’t they? I thought we did ok, given the other team had pipe bombs for every horde and witches that were scared of them.

Check out detour ahead
We have it up on a dedicated server so you should be able to get a good game going. It will remind you of L4D1 maps and it is dark as hell, but fun as hell in versus.

I think the most important thing about spitter is to only commit when there’s something going on - a horde, a boom, a charge etc. Spitting just to delay is rarely effective, and if nothing else is going on, the spit is easily avoided.
wtf… Where did all this Drama come from today?
If you pause the game and ask for a team swap (or insist I did the team swap wrong, which I did), I promise we will make it right. You don’t have to bang your head against a wall for twenty minutes and then rage quit for not saying something sooner. In all honesty, it’s really hard to tell if the opposing team’s makeup is not working out… Or at least I am generally clueless to that sort of thing. I’m a lot more concerned with killing zombies.

Bunny, you guys beat us by, like, a million points on the first map. And then again the second map (though, okay, we swapped trey for someone). This isn’t hard to pick up on :p
I donno man, the scores on Hotel are always lopsided. There’s just so many hazards that incap the whole team before the map is even halfway done (and that’s the way I like it!). I thought Trey was the best player on our team. Maybe I’m not a good judge on other players’ skills. I donno.
I guess we need a house-rule on this. If one team is up 400 points, always do a sm_scrambleteams?

400 points after the first map? I vote yes.
And anyway, those hazards? Weren’t what incapped us.
I didn’t think it was 400 points on the first map… So, I had to go back and read the logs to find out.
L 07/01/2010 - 21:54:45: [l4d2scores.smx] [SCORE] FORWARD: OnSetCampaignScores(341,53)
So it was 341 to 53, and the next map was even more lopsided, but the teams were swapped, so it was enough that it almost evened out.
Anyway, like I said, just ask for a team scramble.
Which reminds me. I’ve been meaning to ask everyone… do we want to reset scores when teams are evened?

Personally I don’t care, it’s just a number. But I have a feeling it affects some people’s morale.
